Lou Williams to Lakers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Free-agent guard Lou Williams has elected to join the Los Angeles Lakers.
The team confirmed the signing on July 9:
Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports Williams' contract is worth $21 million over three years.
After the news broke, Williams took to Twitter to confirm his move west:
Williams played for the Toronto Raptors last season and came off the bench to average a career-high 15.5 points. The major contribution was enough to garner him Sixth Man of the Year honors. The 28-year-old has averaged double figures in scoring each of the past eight years.
After he won the prestigious accolade, Williams reflected on his battle back from a torn ACL while playing for the Atlanta Hawks in January 2013, per ESPN's Brian Windhorst:
"I didn't think I was going to be the same player [after ACL tear]. I knew I wasn't going to have the foot speed I once had, I knew I wasn't going to be able to jump as high. But it taught me to be smart and I worked on different parts of my game. Being able to evolve and change my game to win this award is very gratifying.
"
Despite not being the most proficient shooter, with a career 41.6 field-goal percentage and a 34.1 percent success rate from downtown, Williams does bring instant offense to the hardwood. He still has decent quickness, is capable of solid on-ball defense and can create plays off the bounce with excellent ball-handling skills.
As he mentioned in the prior quote, the major knee injury forced Williams to become a better all-around player. It stands to reason he'll be slated for a suitable sixth-man role with the Lakers in what's shaping up to be a potent perimeter rotation.
Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times offered his take on where Williams will play:
L.A. took D'Angelo Russell No. 2 overall in the 2015 draft and has a promising second-year guard in Jordan Clarkson. Both can play either guard spot, and of course, Kobe Bryant is still in the fold. Bryant and Nick Young are volume shooters, so Williams' exact fit remains a mystery.
With his demonstrated toughness and the way he's reinvented his game, Williams stands to gain even more from being around Bryant as the Lakers look to usher in a new era with an improved 2015-16 campaign.
