Realistic Draft Trade Possibilities for the Denver Broncos

Travis WakemanApr 27, 2015

There are always trades in the NFL draft. It's just part of the process. The teams who manage the board the best are able to move up to get the player they really want or move down to package picks.

The Denver Broncos have 10 picks in the upcoming draft, so moving down to package picks probably won't bee much of an option. However, using some of those picks as bait to move up is a possibility, especially considering the Broncos being in win-now mode with Peyton Manning.

But trading in the draft doesn't just pertain to picks and prospects. Sometimes, veteran players are shuffled around as well.

With that said, here are five realistic trade possibilities for the Broncos in this draft, which opens Thursday night.

Trade Up with Arizona in First Round

1 of 5

Moving up to the No. 24 spot in the first round makes sense if an offensive lineman the Broncos covet is still on the board. That player could be D.J. Humphries, T.J. Clemmings, Jake Fisher or Cameron Erving.

Moving up to No. 24 would put the Broncos one slot ahead of the Carolina Panthers, who also figure to be hunting for an offensive lineman.

If the Broncos feel the Panthers may steal their pick, trading with Arizona would prevent that. In the process, the Broncos would give up the No. 28 overall pick along with another pick later in the draft, perhaps their first choice in the fifth round.

Would the Broncos be giving up too much? That would remain to be seen, but there is no doubt the team needs to improve the offensive line in this draft and taking one of the aforementioned players in the first round seems highly probable.

Trade Up in Second Round to Get Ty Sambrailo or Laken Tomlinson

2 of 5

If the Broncos fail to obtain an offensive lineman in the first round, or choose to go in a different direction, trading up in the second round is a possibility.

Ty Sambrailo, a right tackle out of Colorado State, and Laken Tomlinson, a guard from Duke, are two players who could instantly fortify the offensive line. However, neither player figures to be on the board when Denver selects at No. 59 in the second round.

Trading up into the early part of the second round would be a costly move for the Broncos, which could demand the team's third round pick as well, but these are two players who could start in the league for a decade.

"

BTW: 2 days later, was told CSU OT Ty Sambrailo had a terrific Pro Day. 19 teams, including Broncos attened. Excelled in position drills.

Sambrailo would fit well in a zone-blocking scheme. He can mirror edge rushers and gets to the second level of blocks with some regularity. He might just be worth coming up to get.

Trade Up to No. 19 in the First Round

3 of 5

This would be an aggressive move for the Broncos to make, but they could see the Philadelphia Eagles sitting at No. 20 and assume that Chip Kelly is looking for an offensive lineman. Perhaps that player is former Oregon offensive tackle Jake Fisher.

If the Broncos feel that Fisher is a prospect they can't miss on, they could attempt to work a deal for the Cleveland Browns' second choice in the first round, No. 19 overall.

The Browns would likely have a hefty price tag on that pick, and the Broncos would almost certainly have to give up their second-round pick or multiple picks in later rounds to move up nine slots in the first round.

As stated before, the Broncos need to make a pick that impacts the offensive line. That really can't be overstated.

Trade Up If Vic Beasley Starts to Fall

4 of 5

While drafting a superior offensive lineman needs to be the main goal of the first round, the Broncos wouldn't be doing their due diligence if they didn't keep their eyes on every player.

Each year, one highly-projected draft pick seems to fall in the first round. And this year, that player could be Vic Beasley out of Clemson.

You can never have too many pass-rushers in the NFL, and you can't pass up the opportunity to grab a dynamic one. That's exactly what Beasley is.

Though Beasley could easily be selected in the top 10, if he gets past the New Orleans Saints at No. 13, Beasley could be in for a free fall. The Broncos would then have to watch closely and consider pulling the trigger on a trade if he fell down towards the last quarter of the first round.

Beasley's ability to rush the passer is evident. He has a wide array of pass-rush moves to go along with a high motor. If you ever watch his tape, you immediately notice how often he gets into the backfield, whether to put pressure on the quarterback or to stuff a running play.

Every team in the league could use a player like Beasley, and although the Broncos already have DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller, adding Beasley to the mix would make the defense incredibly tough to deal with.

While this scenario isn't likely, all possibilities must be considered in the draft.

Find a New Home for Montee Ball

5 of 5

Is it time to move on from Montee Ball already? It certainly could be.

Ball had a disappointing season last year when it was supposed to be his job to perform—but he could only sit and watch as C.J. Anderson, an undrafted player, ended up in the Pro Bowl.

Anderson appears to have the starting role locked up—and with Ronnie Hillman and the very promising Juwan Thompson on the roster, Gary Kubiak and his staff could see Ball as being expendable.

There are several teams in the league who are in need of a running back and some of them may be all too happy to take Ball off Denver's hands.

If the Broncos could put the right deal together, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Ball sent packing.
