Seth Rollins' Main Event Status Is Cemented After Defeating Dean Ambrose

Tom ClarkOct 29, 2014

Seth Rollins defeated Dean Ambrose at WWE Hell in a Cell on Sunday, October 26.  The win came following the unexpected return of Bray Wyatt, who distracted and attacked Ambrose, allowing Rollins to get the pin.

While the end of the match may not have been what many fans wanted to see, the match itself was surely worth the price of admission.  And now that Rollins is moving past Ambrose, his main event status is firmly cemented.

It was a showdown that the WWE faithful could not wait to see.  From the moment that Rollins betrayed his Shield brethren back on June 2, he has been mercilessly pursued by Ambrose.  The man known as The Lunatic Fringe has more than lived up to his nickname, and he has proved how crazy obsessed he has been at getting revenge for the past four months.

Everywhere Rollins went, Ambrose followed.  Every time Rollins spoke, Ambrose interrupted him.  Ambrose became Rollins' twisted shadow, hell-bent on vengeance.  Ambrose was convinced that he would destroy Rollins, essentially taking The Authority's newest protegee out of commission.

The association with Triple H's corporate heel group came as a direct result of Rollins' betrayal of The Shield.  Unable to take The Hounds of Justice down on his own, The Game decided to attack the group from the inside.  That meant getting to Rollins, who was more than happy to go along with the plan.

Ambrose and Roman Reigns had no reason to believe anything was wrong.  That was when Rollins pounced.

Since that time, Rollins has been working under Triple H's wing.  He has been touted as the future of WWE, the man who is basically the crown jewel of The Authority.  Triple H has embraced Rollins much in the same way he once embraced a rookie Randy Orton, and Rollins could very well be on his way to big things in the company.

And all of that started with beating Ambrose at Hell in a Cell.

Bray Wyatt attacks Ambrose at Hell in a Cell.

Some fans may point to the fact that Rollins got an assist from Wyatt to procure the win.  Indeed, Ambrose appeared to have the match in hand until The Eater of Worlds interjected himself into the situation.  But if it had not been Wyatt, it would have been someone else.

The Authority takes care of its own.  With Rollins as the man who has essentially replaced Orton as the group's centerpiece, there is no doubt that The Authority would be there when he needed it.  And he definitely needed it at Hell in a Cell.

Despite how he won, the point is he won.  But it wasn't easy.

Ambrose was on his game, and the two men put on a very entertaining match.  They brought drama and intensity and proved why they belonged in the main event spot.  For Ambrose, it was just another day at the office.  For Rollins, it was his opportunity to rise to the occasion, and he did just that.

While Rollins has been in The Authority since The Shield split, much of the spotlight has been shining down on Ambrose.  The biggest reason for that is his character, which has captivated fans and kept them intrigued from day one.

Ambrose and John Cena

Ambrose has that every-man quality, that certain intangible that allows the fans to get close to him and identify with him.  He is very funny, and it's obvious that he is enjoying himself every time he's on camera.

He is rubbing shoulders with John Cena.  That means he has been sharing that intense spotlight, and many fans are only just now seeing how good he is and what he brings to the company.  Considering that Reigns and Daniel Bryan are both on the shelf with injury, the WWE is in need of more top protagonists.

That is likely much of the reason why Ambrose is as over right now as he is.  It may also be the reason why some fans feel he is further ahead in his career than Rollins.

But that has surely changed now.  Rollins proved at Hell in a Cell that he has come just as far as Ambrose has.  He may be the next top guy in terms of The Authority storyline, but for many fans, it is very much reality.  Rollins is a great antagonist, and WWE could always use more of those.

The main event scene in WWE may be somewhat depleted right now, but there's hope.  Rollins is part of that hope, and things can only get better from here.
