Cesaro Should Defeat Dolph Ziggler for Intercontinental Title at Hell in a Cell

Sharon GlencrossOct 9, 2014

In order for Cesaro to get his troubled career back on track, the Swiss will surely have to take the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Dolph Ziggler at Hell in a Cell on Oct. 26.

Cesaro’s career has been in a depressing slump ever since he parted ways with Paul Heyman in the storylines in July. He’s still as tremendous a wrestler as ever, of course—his excellent bout against Sheamus at Night of Champions stole the show—but he seems to be going absolutely nowhere right now.

Thankfully, there is a glimmer of hope for the star, as he looks to be headed for a feud over the Intercontinental Championship. WWE has teased a Ziggler-Cesaro confrontation in recent weeks, with backstage reports (from F4Wonline via WrestlingInc) indicating this is indeed the plan for Hell in a Cell.

Ideally, the booking team will script the former Ring of Honor performer to go over at the show and win the belt. Simply put, he needs the boost.

OK, so the Intercontinental Championship won’t be sending anyone to the main event scene any time soon, but it is a credible belt and helps keep whoever holds it (somewhat) relevant.

Certainly, Ziggler’s status has been significantly improved by holding the title. He feels like an important part of the show again after several months of being lost in the shuffle.

And a run with the Intercontinental Championship could surely do something similar for Cesaro. It would guarantee him a decent and prominent spot on the roster and get him on television regularly again.

It could also lead to new booking opportunities for him.

Perhaps The Authority—eager to get some WWE titles in its stable—could recruit him. It would be an interesting alliance, and it’s not exactly unexpected either (Cesaro was urging Triple H to allow him to join in a backstage segment a couple of months ago).

There would also be several promising feuds for new champion Cesaro after Hell in a Cell. He could tangle with United States champion Sheamus again, only this time in a title unification bout. Honestly, anything that gets these two in the ring together on a regular basis can only be a good thing. As mentioned, their chemistry is simply superb.

Alternatively, he could continue to feud with Ziggler after he wins the title.

Despite what you may think, Ziggler and his credibility wouldn’t necessarily be damaged by a loss to Cesaro at the pay-per-view, provided, of course, that WWE scripts Cesaro to win by nefarious means. Besides, there may simply be more interest in the babyface Ziggler chasing the heel for the belt. It makes for a far more interesting dynamic.

A victory—and a title win—at Hell in a Cell won’t drastically turn things around for Cesaro, but it at least will get him back on the right track. And few could argue this isn't something he desperately needs right now.
