WWE Hell in a Cell 2014: Stars Who Will Break out at PPV Event

Brad JonesOct 7, 2014

There are a host of young wrestlers on the WWE roster who are hungry for an opportunity to take their careers to the next level—and a pay-per-view like Hell in a Cell is as good a time as any to do so.

With the road to WrestleMania just around the corner, it's high time for those on the cusp of the main event to stake their claim to a big program going into the biggest show of the year. Opportunity is knocking for the megastars of tomorrow. Who will take advantage?

First, and perhaps foremost, comes Rusev. Initially written off by many as merely the WWE's latest attempt at a foreign monster heel, we've seen the Bulgarian Brute flourish in recent months. His partnership with Lana has solidified a reaction from the crowd, and his in-ring work has really started to impress.

Rusev has expanded the array of moves in his arsenal, but it's the fundamentals that he's demonstrated that really bode well for his future. Unlike some on the roster, Rusev has a concrete understanding of how to tell a story in the ring, which gives his matches depth beyond what you might expect from a wrestler of his style.

Last night on Raw, Rusev was paired with The Rock as the People's Champion made a surprise return to WWE television. This should tell you all you need to know about where Rusev is heading. You don't get paired with the Great One for nothing.

It seems that Rusev will face the Big Show at Hell in a Cell. While that might not be the most appealing matchup on paper, it could very well turn out to be a surprise. His matches with Big E and Jack Swagger earlier in the year exceeded expectations, so it's not unlikely that this bout might turn out similarly.

Regardless, the perennial main eventer Big Show is Rusev's most potent opposition yet, so a win could be a big moment for the Super-Athlete. It's difficult to gauge where Rusev is heading over the next few months, but if he can continue like he has thus far in 2014, he'll make the best of whatever he is given.

Bo Dallas graduated from NXT just like Rusev, but they have been utilized quite differently since they made their way to the main roster. After a quietly promising start, Dallas disappeared from television for a while, before resurfacing in recent weeks to challenge Jack Swagger and Mark Henry after they'd been vanquished by Rusev.

Dallas has a WWE Intercontinental title shot this week. Whether he wins or not, you'd have to imagine that his television time of late would earmark him a spot on the Hell in a Cell card. The character Dallas portrays needs face time with an audience to work, so either a match or a promo segment at the pay-per-view might be enough for him to turn the corner in truly securing the interest of his audience.

The only confirmed matches we have for Hell in a Cell thus far make for a make-or-break scenario for two of the most exciting talents on the roster at present. Dean Ambrose and John Cena will face off for the chance to meet Seth Rollins later in the evening inside Hell in a Cell—leaving a very real possibility that both Ambrose and Rollins could fall to the Doctor of Thuganomics over the course of three hours.

That eventuality would be nothing short of a disaster, a resounding statement that the status quo of the last several years isn't set to change any time soon. However, either man scoring a pinfall over Cena could be a big step toward solidifying his status as a premier talent.

Of course, the best showcase for Rollins and Ambrose would be seeing them square off inside the Cell. The pair delivered a Lumberjack match for the ages at SummerSlam, so it's not difficult to imagine that given full run of the structure, they would tear the house down once again.

It hasn't been wins and losses that have made Rollins and Ambrose two of the shining stars of today's WWE; it's been match quality. Beyond anything else, their potential to break out at Hell in a Cell is tied to the show that they can put on—and a meeting inside the Cell is key to that.

A major talking point over the last week has been the seemingly imminent and apparently amicable split of the Wyatt Family. There's been no word of a timescale for this to happen, but it would seem likely that things will move fairly quickly. If they do, Hell in a Cell could be a great opportunity for Luke Harper.

Harper has long been the standout of the Wyatts in terms of in-ring ability. He's been a focal point in tag team bouts, had top-notch singles matches with the likes of John Cena and generally been the workhorse in terms of ring work while Bray Wyatt has acted as the mouthpiece of the group.

While Wyatt certainly has a lot going for him as a singles competitor, for many Harper is the one to get excited about. If his re-emergence comes before Hell in a Cell, or even at it, then it could well be a turning point in his career.

A believable threat to just about anyone on the roster and a hugely capable talent between the ropes, Harper will be a boon to the midcard whenever he makes his official return. As a fan, there's no time like the present to see what the big man can do to let loose on his own.

Is another superstar poised to break out at Hell in a Cell? Will one of the names above fall short of the mark? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
