Dean Ambrose Feuding with John Cena Is Unnecessary

Alfred KonuwaOct 1, 2014

With the star-studded pairings of John Cena and Brock Lesnar and up-and-comers Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, WWE has booked two of its most intriguing long-term feuds in recent memory.

Headed into the pinnacle of finality known as October's Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, each of these feuds have been perfectly set up to culminate in the premier match type.

Unfortunately, WWE is now trying to get cute.

Following a disqualification victory over Lesnar at Night of Champions, Cena's World Championship feud with Lesnar still demands closure. Cena was on the verge of becoming world champion for a record 16th time before being thwarted by Rollins.

But instead of demanding a decisive rubber match in his recent feud with Lesnar—which would take place in a match type that theoretically cannot be interrupted by Rollins—Cena has decided to seek vengeance from Rollins himself.

With Ambrose still on an endless mission to get his hands on the Money in the Bank winner, the result has created tension between babyfaces Cena and Ambrose.

Ambrose and Cena escalated their budding rivalry Monday on Raw when the two literally fought over the opportunity to beat up Rollins. A recent report by PWInsider (subscription required, h/t WrestlingInc.com) noted there are plans for a match between Ambrose and Cena with the winner earning the right to face Rollins inside Hell in a Cell.

The questionable booking would drain momentum from a Lesnar-Cena feud once considered can't-miss. The involvement of Cena also makes for an awkward and unnecessary third wheel in a feud that has already been going strong for four months.

For WWE to book Lesnar as champion only to follow up with an inconclusive finish that doesn't lead to a common-sense cage match, let along a Lesnar appearance at Hell in a Cell, is inexcusable.

Not only has Cena been forced into a feud he doesn't belong in, but the focus is now being taken away from the promotion's top championship.

Should WWE follow through with reported plans to book Seth Rollins as a bigger prize than the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the once-elusive opportunity to beat Brock Lesnar will lose its importance.
