Why the Redskins can cover the spread
Might the Redskins be a better team with Kirk Cousins at quarterback? Well, it looks like we're going to find out, with RG3 now sidelined with a bad ankle injury. The QB switch has sparked a few interesting Cousins prop wagers this week.
Washington opened this season with a miserable loss at Houston, missing the cover as three-point dogs, but looked alive last week against the Jags, racking up 449 yards of offense, 191 yards on the ground, holding the ball for 39 minutes and getting a pair of TD passes from Cousins.
The Skins are now 2-3 SU but 4-1 ATS in games in which Cousins has taken the majority of snaps. Washington will run a more conventional offensive scheme with Cousins, and that might be a good thing.
Why the Eagles can cover the spread
The Eagles are 2-0 both SU and ATS after victories over Jacksonville and Indianapolis. Philly had to come from behind opening weekend against the Jags, down 17-0 at the half, but won the second half 34-0 and covered the spread as a 10-point favorite.
And Monday night the Eagles scored the last 10 points of the game to beat the Colts outright 30-27 as three-point dogs on the road.
Philly led the league in rushing last year, averaging 160 yards per game, and it's run for 145 and 127 yards in two games this season. Teams that have outrushed their opponents are 21-11 ATS this year.
Smart Pick
Philly comes home after a big effort Monday night and will play on the short week. Washington, meanwhile, may have found a groove with Cousins, scoring five touchdowns last week after Griffin left the game.
The Eagles swept the season series last year, but the Redskins, who were going through a terrible lost season, kept both those games within one score.
So the pick for this rivalry game is with the dog and the points, despite the computer’s prediction of a blowout.
Trends:
- Washington is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games on the road
- Redskins are 5-2 ATS in their last seven trips to Philadelphia
- The total has gone UNDER in six of Philadelphia's last nine games at home
