Did We Really Need Almost Every WWE Title To Change Hands at ER?

Joe Burgett Jun 8, 2009

So I am sitting at home watching the WWE Extreme Rules PPV. I personally was into the PPV just about the entire time. We saw a lot of great matches, with the exception of the Mrs. Wrestlemania Hog Pen match.

I did say I was into them, but the winners of the matches were a bit to weird for my taste. Every World Title changed hands for the second time this year. We saw them all change hands at Backlash and now again at Extreme Rules.

On top of that, we did see the Intercontinental Title change hands too. Sure, Kofi Kingston did manage to pull out the win; however, he just won the United States Title on RAW.

So within a week we saw just about all of the WWE's titles change hands. Did we really need this many new champions?

We know Edge loses his World Titles every few months or so, but usually everyone else holds on to their titles for a longer period of time.

When we see these titles change hands so quickly, in my opinion it takes away from the title's creditability.

I feel it was ok to take the ECW Title off of Christian, as Tommy Dreamer did have to win the ECW Title or leave the WWE all together.

We all knew he was not going to leave just yet, mainly because he was scheduled for house shows in August and if was indeed leaving then the WWE would have taken him off cards by now.

He was said to sign a one-day deal to be in the ECW Title match, I would guess he would sign another deal seeing as he is now the ECW Champion.

Dreamer also deserved to win the title too, as he had not held the title in about 10 years, and never held it in the WWE.

Christian was a good champion, but I felt that Dreamer needed to win the title. I think he may have held the ECW Title the longest time he ever has by now. As his only ECW title run didn't really last all that long.

His last title he had in the WWE was the Hardcore Title, which was taken out of the WWE and handed to Mick Foley years ago. So it has been years since he ever held any title, much less the ECW Championship.

So I liked this move.

However, I think it was stupid to take the WWE Title off of Randy Orton and give it to Batista.

Ok, we all know Batista has mentioned that he will only be around another year or so. But why take the WWE Title off of Orton now when you could do it later?

Orton could lose it at Summerslam, and it would bring more credibility to the WWE Title and Orton.

See, Orton has this faction called the Legacy as we all know. The WWE Title made them look a lot better as a group. Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes apparently are not going to do anything but help Orton.

So obviously Orton was the key member in this group and by him holding onto the WWE Title it brought a lot of creditability to the group.

He just won it at Backlash, and the WWE takes it off of him two months later?

This is idiotic if you ask me. Even if Orton wins it back at "The Bash" next month, having him have to win it back is a bad idea.

Have him keep it for a while, then have him lose after five or six months, not just two months after winning it. It seems we are playing musical chairs with the World Titles, all that does is make the champion look weaker.

Vince McMahon even said it himself, he wants World title holders, especially the WWE title holder to hold onto it for a while. So that the new champion will look like he has really accomplished something by beating the former champ.

This win against Orton did not make Batista look any better to me. He looked the same as usual, and that didn't make the title such a big thing.

When Triple H and John Cena were holding the WWE Title, it was held for six or seven months at a time.

So the new champion looked very good when they beat them. This is what we need to get back to, not having the titles change hands so quickly.

Now to the IC Title, as we know Chris Jericho won at Extreme Rules by beating Rey Mysterio and also unmasking him.

This was not a good idea in my eyes. Why did Rey Mysterio win the title to begin with?

To not only help JBL get out of the WWE, but also help to add ratings from the Hispanic audience to SmackDown.

Rey did add to the Hispanic audience according to the Neilson ratings, so obviously his IC Title reign was a good thing that helped Rey get even bigger with that particular audience even more than he already was.

Having Jericho add to his record did not help anything out at all. To me all it did was give Jericho another thing to brag about for the show, it more so took away from the rivalry.

You don't need to have the face in Mysterio lose the title to Jericho right now. Of course, he has held his IC Title for a little while now, so at least he had a longer reign than most.

I feel you should have had Mysterio win then you could have Jericho furious and attack Mysterio from behind, then have him take the mask off.

So of course that would keep the feud going on and still have Mysterio as champ. But I was more upset of what it did for the feud than the creditability of the title itself.

I liked the whole surprise angle with the World Heavyweight Title. So I was not as upset about CM Punk winning it as I was with the WWE Title.

However, I think that they should of had Punk hold off for a bit considering he did win the World Heavyweight Title around the same exact time he did last year.

I feel he will be a better champion than last year, considering he will have better matches and competition considering his only real rivalry was with JBL.

He also never really lost his World Title. Orton punted him in the head right before the Scramble match for the Title.

Mike Adamle placed Chris Jericho in that match and he eventually won.

So Punk was due to win another, but I feel it was to soon to give it to him.

I know the WWE does not want to keep us waiting and waiting when it comes to the Money in the Bank briefcase, but the WWE should know that it was to obvious to have him win it now considering they have been playing it up on SmackDown for a little while.

Also, the rivalry with Punk and Umaga could have gone on longer. However, they made to many mistakes with it early on to save it, so I guess that is why they nixed it Sunday.

I figured they wouldn't even have Jeff Hardy win the title at all considering his contract issues as of late. But how stupid was it to have Hardy win and then have Punk come out and steal the title?

They should have kept Edge as champion then had Punk come out for the win. I guess they didn't let him cash it in on Edge because he was the same person he cashed MITB on last year.

However, Edge was the better fit if you had to have Punk cash it in. There was not reason at all to give Hardy the win here. He held it for five minutes, why even give him the title at all if your not going to let him leave the PPV with it?

I know the WWE wanted to add to the surprise, but come on. That was completely stupid if you ask me.

To me, there was to many title changes at the PPV and this whole week too.

With the US, IC, ECW, WWE, and WH Title all changing hands you have to think it is a bad idea.

How long will the WWE keep the titles on these men? What one or two months again? It makes the champions look weak, and makes the rivalries look bad too. Mainly because the ultimate goal for the rivalries for the titles is to win the title from the champion.

If you keep having everyone win in their rivalries, it will be boring to watch because we will always know the end result.
