MLB Power Rankings: Re-Ranking All 30 Teams' Lineups After Week 1

Chris StephensApr 8, 2013

The first week of the Major League Baseball season is over, and it's been an exciting one.

From Bryce Harper's two home runs on Opening Day to the Upton brothers creating history Saturday night, the first week has been exciting.

MLB featured columnist Doug Mead produced a power ranking before Opening Day.

Did anything change?

Here's a look at each MLB team's lineup and where it stands in regard to the rest of the league.

Note: Statistics courtesy of Baseball-Reference.com unless otherwise noted.

30. Houston Astros

1 of 30

Rank Last Week: 29

Record This Week: 1-5

Lineup

2B Jose Altuve
1B Brett Wallace
LF Chris Carter
DH Carlos Pena
CF Justin Maxwell
RF Rick Ankiel
C Jason Castro
3B Matt Dominguez
SS Marwin Gonzalez

The Houston Astros opened the week with an exciting 8-2 win over Texas. However, that feeling didn't last long. Two nights later, the Astros nearly had a perfect game thrown against them by Yu Darvish.

From there, it wasn't pretty, as Houston scored just nine runs the rest of the week, including a sweep at the hands of Oakland.

Not helping the cause are Carter, Wallace and Ankiel, who have combined for 34 strikeouts through the first week.

It's going to be a long season in Houston.

Upcoming: at Mariners (3), at Angels (3)

29. Pittsburgh Pirates

2 of 30

Rank Last Week: 25

Record This Week: 1-5

Lineup

LF Starling Marte
RF Garrett Jones
CF Andrew McCutchen
3B Pedro Alvarez
1B Gaby Sanchez
C Russell Martin
2B Neil Walker
SS Clint Barmes
Starting Pitcher

Who would have thought after the start the Pittsburgh Pirates had last year that they would come out of the gate struggling this year?

The Pirates scored eight runs the entire week, looking as if they had never picked up a bat before. They scored three runs once and scored two or less the rest of the week. That's not exactly a way to improve from last year.

Marte is leading the team in average (.261), while McCutchen (.238) is the only other player above .200.

While this lineup should warrant a higher place, until it can show it, the Pirates will sit at or near the bottom.

Upcoming: at Diamondbacks (3), vs. Reds (3)

28. Miami Marlins

3 of 30

Rank Last Week: 30

Record This Week: 1-5

Lineup

LF Juan Pierre
3B Placido Polanco
RF Giancarlo Stanton
1B Greg Dobbs
CF Justin Ruggiano
C Rob Brantly
SS Adeiny Hechavarria
2B Donovan Solano
Starting Pitcher

I don't think anyone is surprised at how much the Miami Marlins struggled this week.

The only time the Marlins didn't score three runs or less was in their 7-5 win over the Mets on Friday. Outside of that, the team scored seven runs the entire week, including one in its series with Washington.

Dobbs and Ruggiano each had four RBI during the week, but Stanton struggled with 10 strikeouts.

Upcoming: vs. Braves (3), vs. Phillies (3)

TOP NEWS

Washington Nationals v Los Angeles Angels
New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

27. Chicago Cubs

4 of 30

Rank Last Week: 27

Record This Week: 2-4

Lineup

CF David DeJesus
SS Starlin Castro
1B Anthony Rizzo
LF Alfonso Soriano
RF Nate Schierholtz
C Welington Castillo
3B Luis Valbuena
2B Alberto Gonzalez
Starting Pitcher

The Chicago Cubs started out the week great, winning two games over Pittsburgh.  Then, things fell apart against the Braves. The fault doesn't fall with the offense, however, as it was the pitching that made the mistakes.

Still, the Cubs scored more than three runs just once this week, only totaling 13 the entire week.

Things aren't looking good for the offense, with the team's average at just .175 over the first week.

Upcoming: vs. Brewers (3), vs. Giants (4)

26. San Diego Padres

5 of 30

Rank Last Week: 26

Record This Week: 1-5

Lineup

SS Everth Cabrera
RF Will Venable
LF Carlos Quentin
1B Yonder Alonso
3B Jedd Gyorko
2B Alexi Amarista
CF Cameron Maybin
C Nick Hundley
Starting Pitcher

The San Diego Padres are another team that's expected to struggle a bit this year. The first week clearly showed that.

The Padres scored 14 runs the entire week, with two runs or less in four of their six contests.

There's no doubt that the injury to Chase Headley and the suspension of Yasmani Grandal have affected the team a little. However, a .191 batting average is not good for a team at the big league level.

Maybin has struggled with a .059 average, while the top of the order is also batting below the Mendoza line.

Upcoming: vs. Dodgers (3), vs. Rockies (3)

25. Milwaukee Brewers

6 of 30

Rank Last Week: 5

Record This Week: 1-5

Lineup

RF Norichika Aoki
2B Rickie Weeks
LF Ryan Braun
C Jonathan Lucroy
3B Alex Gonzalez
CF Carlos Gomez
1B Yuniesky Betancourt
SS Juan Segura
Starting Pitcher

I don't want to say I knew it (still early in the season), but the Milwaukee Brewers are exactly where I thought they would be.

With Corey Hart already on the disabled list, the Brewers could not afford an injury to another power hitter.

Guess what happened? Aramis Ramirez is now on the DL.

Things could get better for the Brewers, but let's call a spade a spade.

The Brewers scored 22 runs during the week, finally showing a little life on Sunday before losing in 11 innings, 8-7. Still, injuries are the key here. Until Braun has more than Lucroy protecting him, the Brewers aren't going much of anywhere.

Upcoming: at Cubs (3), at Cardinals (3)

24. Seattle Mariners

7 of 30

Rank Last Week: 23

Record This Week: 3-4

Lineup

RF Michael Saunders
CF Franklin Gutierrez
DH Kendrys Morales
LF Michael Morse
1B Justin Smoak
3B Kyle Seager
C Jesus Montero
2B Dustin Ackley
SS Brendan Ryan

The Seattle Mariners were one of the few teams to not have a day off this week.

While they have lost their last two by a score of 4-3, the Mariners showed a lot this week that gives fans hope for this year.

For starters, they split a series with Oakland, and Morse killed the ball. He's batting .310 with five home runs and eight RBI. While his 10 strikeouts are high, fans should be happy with what he's done thus far.

Upcoming: vs. Houston (3), vs. Texas (4)

23. Cleveland Indians

8 of 30

Rank Last Week: 22

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

CF Michael Bourn
SS Asdrubal Cabrera
2B Jason Kipinis
1B Nick Swisher
LF Michael Brantley
C Carlos Santana
DH Mark Reynolds
3B Lonnie Chisenhall
RFDrew Stubbs

The Cleveland Indians surprised many by taking two games from Toronto to open the season.

A question mark for this team seems to be consistency. They were shutout two-straight games against Tampa and then scored 13 runs in a win on Sunday. If the Indians are going to make any noise in the AL Central, they'll have to be more consistent.

Upcoming: vs. Yankees (4), vs. White Sox (3)

22. Tampa Bay Rays

9 of 30

Rank Last Week: 21

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

CF Desmond Jennings
RF Sam Fuld
2B Ben Zobrist
3B Evan Longoria
LF Matt Joyce
SS Yunel Escobar
1B James Loney
C Jose Molina
DH Kelly Johnson

The Tampa Bay Rays scored 25 runs this week, but they've been unimpressive thus far.

Zobrist has been good early, batting .429 with one home run and seven RBI. But the Rays are starting to realize that although their pitching is good, the offense is going to have to show up consistently at some point. If it doesn't, the Rays will be watching the playoffs from home once again.

Upcoming: at Texas (3), at Boston (4)

21. New York Yankees

10 of 30

Rank Last Week: 19

Record This Week: 2-4

Lineup

CF Brett Gardner
2B Robinson Cano
3B Kevin Youkilis
DH Travis Hafner
LF Vernon Wells
RF Ichiro Suzuki
SS Eduardo Nunez
1B Lyle Overbay
C Francisco Cervelli

After years of buying the top free agents and leading baseball in payroll, you can bet nobody feels sorry for the New York Yankees. Sure, guys like Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson are on the disabled list, but injuries are a part of the game.

The Yankees showed signs of life with a 7-0 win over the Tigers on Sunday, but they still have a long way to go.

The good news is that Youkilis and Wells have been hitting the ball well, which makes some of the injuries a little easier to deal with.

Upcoming: at Indians (4), vs. Orioles (3)

20. Philadelphia Phillies

11 of 30

Rank Last Week: 13

Record This Week: 2-4

Lineup

CF Ben Revere
SS Jimmy Rollins
2B Chase Utley
1B Ryan Howard
3B Michael Young
LF Domonic Brown
RF John Mayberry Jr.
C Erik Kratz
Starting Pitcher

The Philadelphia Phillies are lucky to have two wins this week instead of zero. Cliff Lee bailed them out on Thursday, and Kevin Frandsen bailed them out on Saturday. Overall, though, it was a pitiful week for the Phillies, as they scored a total of 25 runs.

Utley has been on top of it with one home run and six RBI. But outside of that, the Phillies haven't gotten much going at the plate.

Upcoming: vs. Mets (3), at Marlins (3)

19. San Francisco Giants

12 of 30

Rank Last Week: 15

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

CF Angel Pagan
2B Marco Scutaro
3B Pablo Sandoval
C Buster Posey
RF Hunter Pence
1B Brandon Belt
LF Gregor Blanco
SS Brandon Crawford
Starting Pitcher

I honestly expected more out of the San Francisco Giants to begin the season. 15 runs in a week from the defending champions? Are you serious?

The Giants scored more than three runs just once during the week and were outscored 20-6 in the final two games against the Cardinals.

Fresh off his huge contract, Posey is only batting .200, while Scutaro (last year's playoff hero) is batting .087.

We have to see more from the offense.

Upcoming: vs. Rockies (3), at Cubs (4)

18. Kansas City Royals

13 of 30

Rank Last Week: 14

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

LF Alex Gordon
SS Alcides Escobar
DH Billy Butler
3B Mike Moustakas
C Salvador Perez
1B Eric Hosmer
CF Lorenzo Cain
RF Jeff Francoeur
2B Chris Getz

The Kansas City Royals went 3-3 this week, including taking two games from the Phillies. The Royals struggled in their opening series against the White Sox, scoring on five runs, but they scored 25 against Philadelphia.

Butler had a massive day on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with one home run and seven RBI.

Upcoming: vs. Twins (3), vs. Blue Jays (3)

17. Toronto Blue Jays

14 of 30

Rank Last Week: 3

Record This Week: 2-4

Lineup

SS Jose Reyes
LF Melky Cabrera
RF Jose Bautista
1B Edwin Encarnacion
DH Adam Lind
C J.P. Arencibia
CF Colby Rasmus
3B Maicer Izturis
2B Emilio Bonifacio

For a team that had as much hype as the Toronto Blue Jays did, starting out 2-4 is not exactly the way to give fans confidence. The team scored 22 runs during the week and scored two runs or less three times.

Thursday's 10-8 win over the Indians is the only game during the week where the offense showed life. Outside of that, the Blue Jays averaged 2.4 runs in the other five games.

Arencibia is leading the team with three home runs, but six of the nine starters are batting .250 or worse.

There's a lot of work to be done in Toronto.

Upcoming: at Tigers (3), at Royals (3)

16. New York Mets

15 of 30

Rank Last Week: 28

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

CF Collin Cowgill
2B Daniel Murphy
3B David Wright
1B Ike Davis
RF Marlon Byrd
LF Lucas Duda
C John Buck
SS Ruben Tejada
Starting Pitcher

Don't look too deep into the record of the New York Mets. A 4-2 record is good to have, but it was against the Padres and Marlins.

The Mets came out of the gate quickly, scoring 19 runs in the first two games of the season. After two straight losses, they ended the week with 7-3 and 4-3 victories over the Marlins.

Buck has come out of the gate hot, hitting .400 with two home runs and nine RBI. Meanwhile, Davis is struggling, batting .136 with nine strikeouts.

Upcoming: at Phillies (3), at Twins (3)

15. Chicago White Sox

16 of 30

Rank Last Week: 12

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

CF Alejandro De Aza
3B Jeff Keppinger
RF Alex Rios
DH Adam Dunn
1B Paul Konerko
LF Dayan Viciedo
SS Alexi Ramirez
C Tyler Flowers
2B Gordan Beckham

The Chicago White Sox scored 22 runs this week, which should be a cause for concern because their games were against the Royals and Mariners. They did put four runs on Felix Hernandez, but they also struggled against lesser pitchers like Jeremy Guthrie.

Five of the nine starters are batting .240 or below, and nobody has more than five RBI. And let's not forget the top of order is 5-for-45. That's not a recipe for success.

In the end, the key is winning ballgames, and that's exactly what the White Sox did.

Upcoming: at Nationals (3), at Indians (3)

14. Los Angeles Dodgers

17 of 30

Rank Last Week: 9

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

LF Carl Crawford
2B Mark Ellis
CF Matt Kemp
1B Adrian Gonzalez
RF Andre Ethier
3B Luis Cruz
C A.J. Ellis
SS Justin Sellers
Starting Pitcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers didn't have their bats on fire during the week, but they found ways to get the job done. After losing two of three games to the Giants, the Dodgers swept the Pirates to end the week on a high note.

The one surprising stat is the Dodgers only have three home runs this year, with one of those coming from pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

Crawford, Gonzalez and Ellis are hitting .389 or better. The key is Kemp, who is batting .100. Once he gets going, the Dodgers should start scoring more runs.

Upcoming: at Padres (3), at Diamondbacks (3)

13. Minnesota Twins

18 of 30

Rank Last Week: 24

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

CF Aaron Hicks
C Joe Mauer
LF Josh Willingham
1B Justin Morneau
DH Ryan Doumit
3B Trevor Plouffe
RF Chris Parmalee
2B Brian Dozier
SS Pedro Florimon

The Minnesota Twins were supposed to be cellar-dwellers this year.

I guess they didn't get the memo.

The Twins took two games each from the Tigers and Orioles, both of which were playoff teams last year. They scored 28 runs during the week and won three one-run games.

Morneau seems to be back, hitting .364 with two doubles and three RBI.

Upcoming: at Royals (3), vs. Mets (3)

12. Oakland Athletics

19 of 30

Rank Last Week: 20

Record This Week: 5-2

Lineup

CF Coco Crisp
C John Jaso
RF Josh Reddick
LF Yoenis Cespedes
SS Jed Lowrie
1B Brandon Moss
3B Josh Donaldson
DH Seth Smith
2B Eric Sogard

The Oakland Athletics started out the week losing two games, but they have since won five straight.

In those five games, the A's scored 37 runs. Sure, it was against the Mariners and Astros, but the offense has looked good thus far.

Other teams in the AL West won't take it easy on those teams, so neither should the A's.

Lowrie has looked good so far, batting .500 with three home runs, four doubles and six RBI.

Upcoming: at Angels (3), vs. Tigers (3)

11. Boston Red Sox

20 of 30

Rank Last Week: 18

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

CF Jacoby Ellsbury
RF Shane Victorino
2B Dustin Pedroia
1B Mike Napoli
3B Will Middlebrooks
C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
DH Jonny Gomes
LF Jackie Bradley Jr.
SS Jose Iglesias

The Boston Red Sox started out the season well, showing good offense in four of the six games. Boston has scored 36 runs and has gotten contributions from every spot in the lineup.

Middlebrooks had three home runs on Sunday, and five starters are batting over .300.

Most encouraging is the fact that Iglesias is batting .529 from the No. 9 spot in the order.

Upcoming: vs. Orioles (3), vs. Rays (4)

10. Washington Nationals

21 of 30

Rank Last Week: 6

Record This Week: 4-2

Average Runs Per Game This Week:

Lineup

CF Denard Span
LF Jayson Werth
RF Bryce Harper
3B Ryan Zimmerman
1B Adam LaRoche
SS Ian Desmond
2B Danny Espinosa
C Wilson Ramos
Starting Pitcher

The Washington Nationals opened the season by sweeping the Marlins, but they then lost two against the Reds. One of those losses was a 15-0 beating.

For all of the talk of Harper's two home runs to begin the year, the rest of the offense has been unimpressive. From spot Nos. 4-7, the Nats are 13-for-79 with one home run and four RBI.

If Washington is going to go anywhere, that has to improve.

Upcoming: vs. White Sox (3), vs. Braves (3)

9. Baltimore Orioles

22 of 30

Rank Last Week: 16

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

LF Nate McClouth
3B Manny Machado
RF Nick Markakis
CF Adam Jones
1B Chris Davis
C Matt Wieters
SS J.J. Hardy
2B Ryan Flaherty
DH Nolan Reimold

Davis was absolutely on fire for the Baltimore Orioles to begin the week.  With four home runs and 17 RBI, he showed he is a threat in the middle of the lineup. Then there's Jones, who is batting .538 with seven RBI.

Both players are showing the Orioles have some pop in the lineup.

Baltimore scored 37 runs this week, but it lost two one-run games to the Twins to end the week.

Even so, there's a lot to be excited about if you're an Orioles fan.

Upcoming: at Red Sox (3), at Yankees (3)

8. Detroit Tigers

23 of 30

Rank Last Week: 2

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

CF Austin Jackson
RF Torii Hunter
3B Miguel Cabrera
1B Prince Fielder
DH Victor Martinez
LF Andy Dirks
SS Jhonny Peralta
C Alex Avila
2B Omar Infante

The Detroit Tigers had a good 2012 season, but 2013 didn't start the way they hoped. The Tigers scored 24 runs during the week, but they struggled against the Twins, scoring only eight runs.

Fielder is the only one with stats of note, with two home runs and eight RBI. Cabrera has six RBI, but no home runs.

Even though it was a disappointing week, Detroit will be fine in the long run.

Upcoming: vs. Blue Jays (3), at Athletics (3)

7. St. Louis Cardinals

24 of 30

Rank Last Week: 4

Record This Week: 3-3

Lineup

CF Jon Jay
3B Matt Carpenter
LF Matt Holliday
1B Allen Craig
RF Carlos Beltran
C Yadier Molina
SS Pete Kozma
2B Daniel Descalso
Starting Pitcher

The St. Louis Cardinals showed offense at times during the week.  They scored 37 runs, with six or more runs being scored in four games.

The three big hitters (Holliday, Beltran and Molina) are struggling, although they have combined for 13 RBI. Once all three start getting on base more consistently, the Cardinals will win more of those close games.

Upcoming: vs. Reds (3), vs. Brewers (3)

6. Arizona Diamondbacks

25 of 30

Rank Last Week: 17

Record This Week: 5-1

Lineup

RF Gerardo Parra
3B Martin Prado
2B Aaron Hill
C Miguel Montero
1B Paul Goldschmidt
LF Jason Kubel
CF A.J. Pollock
SS Cliff Pennington
Starting Pitcher

The Arizona Diamondbacks got the 2013 season off to a good start, taking two games against St. Louis before sweeping Milwaukee on the road.

Arizona scored 37 runs during the week, including 10-9, 16-inning win versus the Cardinals. Add in another extra-inning victory Sunday against the Brewers, and it's safe to say the Diamondbacks are looking good.

Seven of the eight starters are batting over .265, and six of those have at least one home run.

Even better, Parra and Prado are hitting 21-for-62 at the top of the order, giving guys like Hill and Goldschmidt RBI opportunities.

Upcoming: vs. Pirates (3), vs. Dodgers (3)

5. Los Angeles Angels

26 of 30

Rank Last Week: 1

Record This Week: 2-4

Lineup

LF Mike Trout
SS Erick Aybar
1B Albert Pujols
RF Josh Hamilton
DH Mark Trumbo
2B Howie Kendrick
3B Alberto Callaspo
C Chris Iannetta
CF Peter Bourjos

The Los Angeles Angels are another team that disappointed after high expectations.  Los Angeles lost three straight one-run games and showed little life throughout the week.

Two of the Big Four (Trout and Hamilton) have failed to hit a home run and have just three combined RBI.

Needless to say, there are a lot of disappointed Angel fans. But like everything else, this too will pass, and the Big Four will be hitting the cover off the ball.

Although they struggled this week, the Angels get the benefit of the doubt considering who's  in their lineup.

Upcoming: vs. Athletics (3), vs. Astros (3)

4. Texas Rangers

27 of 30

Rank Last Week: 11

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

2B Ian Kinsler
SS Elvis Andrus
DH Lance Berkman
3B Adrian Beltre
LF David Murphy
RF Nelson Cruz
C A.J. Pierzynski
1B Mitch Moreland
CF Leonys Martin

The Texas Rangers began the week with a disappointing loss to the Astros, but they recovered quickly soon after. Texas scored 27 runs during the week and also took two games from the Angels.

Kinsler is leading the team with three home runs, while Berkman and Cruz have combined to go 20-for-44 with two home runs and nine RBI.

Things aren't looking as dire for Texas as some might have thought before the season.

Upcoming: vs. Rays (3), at Mariners (4)

3. Cincinnati Reds

28 of 30

Rank Last Week: 7

Record This Week: 4-2

Lineup

CF Shin-Soo Choo
LF Chris Heisey
1B Joey Votto
2B Brandon Phillips
RF Jay Bruce
3B Todd Frazier
SS Zack Cozart
C Ryan Hanigan
Starting Pitcher

The Cincinnati Reds opened the season with three interleague games against the Angels. They won two of three there and then did the exact same thing against the Nationals.

The Reds scored 38 runs during the week, including a 15-0 beatdown of the Nats. Both losses came in extra innings, but outside of the season opener, the hits have been coming.

Choo and Frazier each have three home runs, while Votto and Bruce are without a homer. It's a definite plus with Choo at the top of the order, especially considering that was an area of weakness for the Reds last year.

Upcoming: at Cardinals (3), at Pirates (3)

2. Atlanta Braves

29 of 30

Rank Last Week: 10

Record This Week: 5-1

Average Runs Per Game This Week:

Lineup

SS Andrelton Simmons
RF Jason Heyward
LF Justin Upton
CF B.J. Upton
2B Dan Uggla
3B Juan Francisco
1B Chris Johnson
C Gerald Lair
Starting Pitcher

The Atlanta Braves were shut down in one game this week, but they looked good in the other five. They scored 31 runs total and absolutely tore the cover off the ball.

Justin Upton was the big bopper of the week, smacking five home runs and seven RBI.

Saturday was the big night, though, as brother B.J. hit the game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth before the younger Upton hit the game-winning home run. It was the first time in MLB history a pair of brothers hit game-tying and game-winning home runs in the same inning.

The one knock on the Braves is  thatthey have 47 strikeouts on the year. But most fans knew that coming in and are okay with it as long as the team is winning.

One thing that hurts is that Freddie Freeman is on the DL with an oblique strain, but the Braves showed they could win without him on Sunday.

Upcoming: at Marlins (3), at Nationals (3)

1. Colorado Rockies

30 of 30

Rank Last Week: 8

Record This Week: 5-1

Lineup

CF Dexter Fowler
2B Josh Rutledge
LF Carlos Gonzalez
SS Troy Tulowitzki
RF Michael Cuddyer
1B Todd Helton
C Wilin Rosario
3B Chris Nelson
Starting Pitcher

Had it not been for an extra-inning loss to the Brewers to open the year, the Colorado Rockies would have finished the week undefeated.

The Rockies scored 39 runs during the week. They scored 19 on the road and 20 at home, so they've shown they can hit away from Coors Field.

Six of the eight starters are batting over .300, and the team as a whole has a combined average of .316.

Power has been evident, with 11 home runs over the first week, including four from Fowler and three from Rosario.
