Blake Griffin and Lob City's Best Highlights from 2011-12

Oren FriedmanJun 7, 2018

Despite a torn Achilles from Chauncey Billups and nagging injuries to Lob City stars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, the Clippers still made it to the Western Conference Semifinals before being swept by the San Antonio Spurs.

From the greatest comeback in NBA playoff history in Memphis to a buzzer beater over the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, Lob City turned Staples Center into the Highlight Factory last season.

We count down the 10 best plays from the Clippers' 2011-12 campaign.

10. Chris Paul Skip Step Lob to DeAndre Jordan in Utah

1 of 10

Dating back to their move from San Diego to Los Angeles, the Clippers could never find the right stroke in Salt Lake City. Going into this game the Clips had lost an unbelievable 42 of their last 43 games in Utah dating back to 1990.

Up two with just over 9:00 minutes left in the third quarter, Paul froze the defense, utilized a crafty skip step dribble and found DeAndre Jordan for the one-handed baseline lob.

Chris Paul delivered the right remedy as he led the Clippers to a nail-biting 107-105 victory.

9. Mo Williams Lob to DeAndre Jordan Against the Wizards

2 of 10

Already up by double digits on the road in Washington DC, the Clippers continued to punish the Wizards inside.

After breaking down the defense and driving to the right, Mo Williams seemingly had an easy layup. As three Wizards defenders converged late, Williams opted to throw the lob to DeAndre Jordan.

Jumping from a foot outside the restricted zone, Jordan hammered it home to the awe of the DC crowd. The Clippers went on to win the game 107-81.

8. Blake Griffin Circus Shot over Serge Ibaka

3 of 10

After a missed layup by Serge Ibaka, Chris Paul had the Clippers off and running. A failed attempt to slow Griffin in transition was aided on a nice recovery by Ibaka.

As Ibaka went for the block, Griffin altered his body, drew the contact and flipped in an unbelievable circus shot over his right shoulder.

It was a statement play as Thunder vs. Clippers was a possible second-round matchup in the playoffs.

The Clippers ended up blowing the game open, winning 92-77 and taking the season series against the Thunder 3-1.

7. Chauncey Billups Buzzer Beater to Beat the Mavericks

4 of 10

After blowing a fourth quarter lead and finding themselves down 88-89 to the visiting Dallas Mavericks, Mr. Big Shot delivered.

With Chris Paul out, the Clippers had been relying on the hot shooting of Mo Williams. Locked up by Jason Terry and unable to get free, Billups inbounded the pass to Griffin.

Sized up on the perimeter with time running out, Billups curled around Griffin and caught a little flip pass that gave him just enough room to hit the game-winning shot as the Clippers prevailed 91-89.

6. 4 Straight 3-Pointers against Oklahoma City

5 of 10

After an 11-2 run to cut the Clippers lead to 52-46 with just over a minute left before halftime, the Clips went off from distance.

After a quick three-pointer from Mo Williams, the Clippers got a steal, swung the ball around the perimeter and found Caron Butler open for a three from the right corner.

A missed three-pointer by James Harden put the Clippers in transition and Mo Williams made the Thunder D pay with a left-wing trey.

Another sloppy pass by the Thunder gave the Clippers the ball back, and Chauncey Billups responded near the top of the key for their fourth straight three-pointer in under a minute.

The Clippers blew the game open 64-46 and never looked back en route to their 112-100 win.

5. Chris Paul Steal and over the Head Pass to Eric Bledsoe for the Dunk

6 of 10

The much-maligned Clippers found themselves in disarray after a slump in March. After decisively dropping back-to-back-to-back games on the road in Indiana, Oklahoma City and New Orleans, the Clippers were on the verge of losing home-court advantage for the playoffs.

Down 89-80 with just over six minutes left at home against the Hornets, Paul willed his team to victory over his former team. Paul stripped the inbounds pass before being seemingly tied up with the ball.

Unbelievably Paul found Bledsoe streaking down the right side and delivered a no look over the head pass that Bledsoe finished with a ferocious dunk.

The Clippers went on to win 107-98.

4. Nick Young Hits 3 Straight 3-Pointers in Game 1 in Memphis

7 of 10

Down 27 on the road in Game 1 against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Clippers found themselves in an insurmountable hole.

As Chris Paul literally begged Vinny Del Negro to give his starters a chance in the fourth quarter, the Clips caught fire against the Grizzlies' staunch defense.

Still down by 12 with just under three minutes to play, Nick Young hit back-to-back-to-back corner threes in under a minute to bring the Clippers within three.

Relentless, the Clippers pulled off the greatest comeback in playoff history 99-98 to complete the Miracle in Memphis.

3. Chris Paul Circus Layup against Spurs in Game 4

8 of 10

Down 3-0 and fighting for their playoff lives at home against the powerhouse Spurs, Chris Paul attempted to will his team to victory.

A back and forth game for the entire second half, CP3 caught the pass at the top of the key. Blowing by Danny Green, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili collapsed the pocket and forced Paul to shoot a high arching layup that sat on the top of the backboard before rolling into the basket for the hoop and the harm.

Paul's free-throw put the Clippers up 97-96. Nevertheless, the Spurs had the last laugh, shutting down the Clippers for the duration of the game and pulling out the 102-99 win to complete the second-round sweep.

2. Blake Griffin Dunks on Pau Gasol Twice

9 of 10

With playoff implications on the line and a shot at the Pacific Division crown, the Staples Center's co-tenants squared up for their rubber match.

The Clippers' first field goal came on a vicious put-back slam by Griffin. Randy Foye missed an open corner three, and a poor box-out by Pau Gasol let Griffin elevate and throw it down as Gasol tumbled to the ground.

In the third quarter with Lob City down 73-62 and the Lakers smelling blood, the Clippers needed an energy boost. Caron Butler ran the Clips' favorite side pick-and-roll that left Griffin with an open path to the basket.

As Gasol made the mistake of trying to contest the hammer, Griffin elevated over him with a nasty right handed slam. Ultimately the Lakers prevailed, pulling out a 113-108 victory and eventually winning the Pacific Division title.

1. Blake Griffin Dunk on Kendrick Perkins

10 of 10

Already up 70-51 in the third quarter, the Clippers relentlessly attacked the Thunder defense with spot-up shooting and hard rolls to the lane.

A left side pick-and-roll between Chris Paul and Blake Griffin made the defense vulnerable. As Paul delivered the crafty bounce pass to Griffin on the left side, Kendrick Perkins was forced to rotate.

Sensing the imminent posterization, Perkins jutted a forearm into Griffin's body to stop the high flying forward's momentum. Unfazed, Griffin simply extended with his right hand, successfully Mozgov-ing Perkins.

The dunk blew up YouTube and the Twitterverse. Even LeBron James conceded dunk of the year, just after leaping over John Lucas III in a Heat win over the visiting Bulls.

More importantly, Lob City went on to win the game 112-100.
