3 Notes New York Jets Should Have Taken from Tim Tebow's Broncos Experience

Jun 7, 2018

One of the more curious moves of the 2012 offseason was the New York Jets acquisition of quarterback Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos for a pair of late-round draft picks and three Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburgers from Jack in the Box.

The picks were easy for head coach Rex Ryan to part with, but he's still conflicted about the sandwiches.

The arrival of the National Football League's most polarizing signal-caller in the Big Apple has set off a firestorm of controversy and speculation regarding the wisdom of the move and Tebow's potential role with the Jets, including the most famous player in Jets history saying of the trade, "I think it stinks"

This assessment came from a quarterback who rode one famous prediction into the Hall of Fame despite pedestrian stats, did a television commercial wearing pantyhose and gave one of the creepiest sideline interviews in the history of sideline interviews, but I digress.

Regardless of how you feel about the Tebow acquisition, the fact remains that he's in New York now, and there are a few valuable lessons that the Jets can take from Tebow's time in the Mile High City that can help maximize his chances for success with Gang Green.

1.) The 75/25 Split

During the Denver Broncos surprising run to the AFC West Championship last year and their even more surprising overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs, Tim Tebow led the team to a number of memorable and exciting fourth quarter comebacks.

Unfortunately, the necessity of many of those comebacks was due to Tebow himself, as the third-year pro often seemed to either not know a football game was taking place or think he was playing for the other team until the final 15 minutes of the game.

The numbers bear this out. Heading into the final game of last season, Tebow's overall passer rating ranked a so-so 14th in the National Football League, but his passer rating of 106.3 in the fourth quarter was tops in the AFC.

A perfect example of this was Denver's Week 14 overtime victory over the Chicago Bears last year. Through the first three quarters, Denver trailed 7-0, Tebow was 3-of-16 passing and his quarterback rating was 13.5.

Yes, you read that right: 13.5.

In the fourth quarter and overtime Tebow went 18-of-24 for 191 yards with a passer rating of over 100, and the Broncos came back to win the game.

The Jets have already said that Mark Sanchez remains their starting quarterback, and that's fine. Hey, let Sanchez play the first three quarters. But if New York is trailing heading into the final frame, throw caution to the wind, put Tebow in the game and watch him throw logic out the window.

2.) Give Tim Tebow Two Extra Bye Weeks Each Season

The Jets' primary competition in the AFC East is of course the New England Patriots, and in the hearts of many Jets fans, New England head coach Bill Belichick is the embodiment of evil wearing a hoodie.

Unfortunately Tebow isn't likely to be of much help to New York in their two matchups with the Patriots, as Belichick appears to have found a game plan that is Kryptonite to Timmyman. Take away the deep ball, stack the line of scrimmage and make Tebow beat you with short and intermediate passes.

It certainly appeared to work last year. In two matchups with the Pats last season (a regular-season loss in Denver and a playoff beatdown at Foxboro), Tebow completed less than 42 percent of his passes, was sacked nine times, turned the ball over twice and the Broncos were outscored 86-33.

So, in Week 7 and Week 12 when the Jets and Patriots clash, keep Tebow on the bench, locked in an equipment closet, hide his car keys so he misses the game altogether, whatever.

Just don't let him anywhere near the field.

3.) Don't Listen to Your Newest "Assistant Coaches"

As I said at the beginning of this piece there may well be no more polarizing player in the NFL than Tim Tebow, and upon his arrival in New York, the Jets picked up about three jillion (approximately) new "coaches," each with an opinion on the best way to get Tebow involved in the Jets' gameplan.

This one should be fairly easy for Rex Ryan to follow, as he doesn't exactly strike one as the sort of person who's big on the listening end of conversations.

So, Rex, ignore the legions of Tebow fans that clamor for him to start after Mark Sanchez throws three interceptions and pay no mind to the hordes of detractors that wail in disgust the fifth time that Tebow air mails a pass 15 feet over a wide open receiver's head.

Just go with your gut (it's kind of hard to miss), do what you think is best and make Tim Tebow Wildcat personnel, punt protector, goal-line fullback, fourth-quarter gunslinger who sells those big foam fingers during halftime or whatever plan of action you think is best.

Personally, I can't wait to see what that is.
