2012 NFL Mock Draft: Full 1st-Round Selections Before Free Agency

Ryan PhillipsJun 2, 2018

With less than a week to go before free agency opens in the NFL, plenty of movement has already happened. Several key players have been released or re-signed, setting up what should be an interesting few weeks before the 2012 NFL draft.

With that in mind, it's time to take a look at how the latest mock draft stands, especially in light of the blockbuster trade for the No. 2 overall selection between the Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams.

Here is my latest 2012 NFL Mock Draft.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Luck has been projected as the top pick in this year's draft for more than a year. Now that Peyton Manning has been let go, this is the obvious choice for the Colts.

2. Washington Redskins (From St. Louis Rams): Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

The Redskins paid a hefty price for the right to select Griffin, but he could turn out to be worth it. Still, surrendering three first-round picks and a second-rounder is a lot to give up.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

In my opinion, Kalil is the ultimate can't-miss prospect in this draft. He has the size, head, bloodlines and nastiness to be a perennial Pro Bowler at left tackle, which is just what the Vikings need.

4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

The Browns would have liked Griffin to fall to them, but thanks to the Redskins trading up, they lost that chance. But Richardson presents a really nice consolation prize.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Claiborne is arguably the best defensive player in this draft. He is a legitimate shutdown corner and should be a stud from day one in the league.

6. St. Louis Rams (From Washington Redskins): Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

The Rams did the smart thing by moving the No. 2 selection and stockpiling picks to help with their rebuilding effort. In Blackmon, they'll finally get quarterback Sam Bradford a legitimate target to throw to.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

The Jaguars need help with their pass rush, and Coples is a physical freak who will fit in perfectly along their 4-3 defensive front.

8. Miami Dolphins: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

The Dolphins already boast four-time Pro Bowler Jake Long on the left side of their offensive line and 2011 first-round pick Mike Pouncey at center. Adding Reiff to play right tackle would give them one of the NFL's best O-lines.

9. Carolina Panthers: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

The Panthers could go in a number of directions here, but head coach Ron Rivera knows the importance of a dominant presence on the interior of a defensive line. Brockers or Dontari Poe would fit here.

10. Buffalo Bills: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama

The Bills need an edge rusher, and Upshaw should provide a flexible presence on the outside. He could play defensive end or linebacker in the team's new 4-3 scheme.

11. Seattle Seahawks: Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina

Ingram's stock is rising steadily, and Pete Carroll loves his defensive ends to be physical and active. He'll fit in perfectly along Seattle's defensive front as a disruptive force that can pressure the quarterback.

12. Kansas City Chiefs: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

Poe absolutely blew up at the combine, and his ability to own the interior of the defensive line makes everyone around him better. The Chiefs have other needs, but he is a steal at this spot and will instantly upgrade their defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

The Cardinals desperately need offensive line help, and while this might be a bit high for Martin, he fills a need and could develop into a fantastic tackle.

14. Dallas Cowboys: David DeCastro, G, Stanford

The Cowboys are another team that could go in a number of directions, but DeCastro is probably the second-best offensive lineman in this class and should be a perennial Pro Bowler. Dallas needs offensive line help, and DeCastro provides that.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College

After his eye-popping performance at the combine, Kuechly showed he's the top pure linebacker in the draft this year. He's a tackling machine and would be a huge upgrade in the middle of the Eagles defense.

16. New York Jets: Mark Barron, S, Alabama

Barron is a perfect fit for the Jets, especially since Jim Leonhard has finished the past two seasons on injured reserve. He is a leader at the back end of the defense, and Rex Ryan will love his toughness.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland Raiders): Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

With Cedric Benson headed out of town, the Bengals need a boost in the running game. Miller is a home run hitter who is developing into more than just a speed guy. With some more experience, he could be really good.

18. San Diego Chargers: Cordy Glenn, G/OT, Georgia

The Chargers needed help along the offensive line before Pro Bowler Kris Dielman retired, but now the situation is desperate. Glenn can play guard and tackle and would fit in and play immediately somewhere.

19. Chicago Bears: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

The Bears need to upgrade their receiving corps, and Floyd will be the best guy available. He is a possession guy, but he can make plays down the field and has enormous, reliable hands.

20. Tennessee Titans: Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC

Perry might be the best pure pass-rusher in this draft class, and the Titans are going to need defensive ends as soon as free agency starts. This is a natural fit.

21. Cincinnati Bengals (From Atlanta Falcons): Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

If Leon Hall comes back healthy, he is solid on one side of the secondary, but Kirkpatrick is a top-10 talent whose stock has dropped thanks to an arrest for marijuana possession. The Bengals have never shied away from character risks, and they won't here.

22. Cleveland Browns: Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska

Plain and simple, David is a playmaker. He is extremely fast and has gotten bigger (233 pounds). The guy is a football player, plain and simple, and someone will reach for him and be thrilled with how he plays between the lines.

23. Detroit Lions: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Konz is an undervalued asset in this draft simply because interior linemen don't carry the same weight as tackles. That said, he is smart, mean and has the ceiling of a Pro Bowler. I think the Lions will take him and not think twice.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Devon Still, DT, Penn State

The Steelers could use an inside linebacker, and they would love to land Poe, but Still is a nice consolation prize. He was the most disruptive interior defensive lineman in the nation this year, and he'll fit in perfectly in Pittsburgh.

25. Denver Broncos: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State

Denver needs to stop the run, and that all starts on the inside of the defensive line. Some experts aren't as high on Worthy as I am, but he was explosive and consistently penetrated offensive fronts in the Big Ten this year. He needs to be more consistent, but with experience, that won't be an issue.

26. Houston Texans: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Wright may not have run as fast as everyone would have liked to see at the combine, but make no mistake, he can stretch the field. The Texans need to add another receiver to take some of the pressure off Andre Johnson, and Wright will do just that.

27. New England Patriots (From New Orleans Saints): Chandler Jones, DE/OLB, Syracuse

This is a bit of a stretch, as Jones is a project who isn't close to a finished product. But Bill Belichick loves athletic edge rushers, and the Patriots need to create more pressure on the quarterback. This is a need pick with a very high upside.

28. Green Bay Packers: Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois

Clay Matthews needs help on the outside, and lining Mercilus up on the other side of the defense will give the Packers one of the most feared pass-rushing duos in the NFL.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

Hightower gives the Ravens the long-term successor to Ray Lewis that they have been looking for.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

Some think the 49ers will target a receiver here, but I think they'll use free agency to upgrade their passing game. Gilmore can help immediately in a number of ways, and with his size and physicality, he'll fit the team's defense well.

31. New England Patriots: Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

With this pick, the Patriots will continue to upgrade a front seven that needs a ton of help. Thomson can play anywhere on the defensive line and be disruptive.

32. New York Giants: Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina

The Giants need to add a linebacker at some point, and Brown is ridiculously fast and will fit perfectly on the outside of their 4-3 defense.
