NBA Rumors: Danny Ainge Will Come Up Empty-Handed in Attempt to Reset Celtics

David DanielsJun 4, 2018

Skilled fishermen don’t need more than one piece of bait.

Danny Ainge is waving the white flag.  Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, once the core of a championship team, have all appeared in trade rumors.  In this case, quantity definitely won’t equal quality for Ainge, who will without a doubt fall short in his attempt to blow up and build up the Boston Celtics.

The Boston Herald’s Mark Murphy reported on the league’s lack of interest for Rondo as a source was quoted, saying that:

"

They’re desperate to (trade Rondo).  He’s the only real asset they have.  The other guys, the Big Three, aren’t assets at this point.  The problem they now face is that he’s an undesirable.  This league is full of undesirables, and some are more talented.  You can probably get (Minnesota Timberwolves forward) Michael Beasley for less than Rondo, but he’s another guy people don’t want.

While the Big Three aren’t assets, Ainge is still hopelessly attempting to squeeze whatever value he possibly can out of the edging veterans.

The New York Daily News’ Mitch Lawrence reported that the Celtics have offered Kevin Garnett to the Atlanta Hawks for Josh Smith.  Yeah, because the Hawks are so incredibly eager to acquire a 35-year old while surrendering a 26-year old who’s averaging more points, boards and blocks per game.

Continuing on this farfetched series of trade offers, Comcast Sportsnet’s A. Sherrod Bailey reported that the L.A. Lakers have been linked to Pierce while the Clippers have been connected to Pierce and Allen.  Naturally while looking for young, up-and-coming talent, Ainge looked to one of the oldest rosters in the NBA and a team that just sold the farm for Chris Paul.

Ainge screwed up last season swapping Kendrick Perkins for Jeff Green.  Now that the Celtics have fallen from championship-contender status, he’s scrambling to put together a chain of moves like he did to form the 2008 squad.  But this time around, the GM doesn't possess the assets to pull off another miracle.
