2012 NFL Free Agents: Targeting Matt Flynn Not a Bad Idea for Browns

Clint EilandJun 7, 2018

A month or two ago, I wrote a piece defending Colt McCoy. It was met with either a positive "yay" or a horrendous "nay" (in nice terms). I still stand by that article.

This is not an article deciding what the Browns should do. Instead, I will be looking at one of their options and examining whether or not it is a good or bad idea.

Let's say for a second that the front office is not happy with McCoy. At all. As in, they want to move on now. They begin their pursuit of a quarterback.

Alas, another problem faces the Browns' front office, as their next target (Robert Griffin III) has just been picked by the Washington Redskins. This is a strong possibility.

So now, they are faced with a situation. They could draft a less proven and not as good quarterback (Ryan Tannehill, Nick Foles), but that might be viewed as wasting a draft pick—especially considering all the team's needs at this point.

That is where Matt Flynn comes in.

The Packers have found their QB, and it is Aaron Rodgers without a doubt. Keeping Flynn is more of a nuisance to them now, especially considering that they could get some huge money and possible future draft picks for him.

There are multiple reasons that the Browns should pick up Flynn, if given the chance.

For one, Flynn does look like he could be ready to start when he is finally granted the opportunity. In his limited game time, Flynn has shown that he can be a starting QB. I'm not just talking about the Lions game (though that was an amazing display of how he could do as a QB).

If you look at some of the other games he has started or at least partially participated in, you see that he has performed very well when given the chance (i.e. Patriots 2010). Flynn could really succeed in Cleveland.

Second, say that the organization doesn't want to kick McCoy out immediately, but it wants to see if he can develop into something good. Signing Flynn would help pressure McCoy to become better, knowing that his starting job and future are on the line. In that case, the next possibility happens.

Finally (as mentioned above), say that McCoy vastly improves and the Browns still have Flynn on their roster. In this case, they could either keep Flynn as a very good backup just in case McCoy gets injured again, or could auction off Flynn to other teams because we all know how many teams may want him.

This is, of course, depending on whether or not the front office really wants a quarterback that badly. Ultimately, we can't say for certain what they will do. This is one of their options that I feel is the best, though.

Overall, targeting Flynn would not be a bad idea at all. In fact, it is a win-win situation for the Browns organization if they choose to do so.
