Who the Heck Is Jeremy Lin?
New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin is taking the NBA by storm. "Linsanity" probably won't reach the same level as "Tebowmania," but with the NFL season over, Lin is beginning to get significant attention for his accomplishments.
With Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire out, the Knicks turned to an unlikely player to lead them. So far in this NBA season, the New York Knicks have not lived up to expectations. Many blame the lack of a true point guard.
It may have taken an Anthony injury and some tragic events for Stoudemire, but they may have found their point guard, in Lin.
Here we will take a look at where the heck Jeremy Lin came from.
High School
1 of 4Jeremy Lin attended Palo Alto High School, in California. In his senior year, he was captain of the boys basketball team.
He led his team to a record of 32-1, and won the Division II state title after beating the heavily favored Mater Dei of Southern California, 51-47.
He was awarded the Northern California (D2) Player of the Year. Lin averaged 15.1 points, 7.1 assists, 6.2 rebounds and five steals a game in his senior season.
College
2 of 4Lin attempted to play college basketball at an Ivy League school. Harvard and Brown were the only two Universities to offer him a guaranteed spot on their basketball team, so Lin chose Harvard.
In his sophomore year, Lin earned the honors of All-Ivy League Second Team, while averaging 12.6 points per game.
In his junior season, Lin moved up and was named to the All-Ivy League First Team. He averaged 17.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.
Lin was once again named to the All-Ivy League First Team in his senior year. He averaged 16.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
Draft and Debut
3 of 4Lin declared for the 2010 NBA Draft, however, he went undrafted. Had he been drafted, Lin would have been the first Ivy League player drafted since 1995.
Lin had offers from the Lakers and Mavericks, however, he decided to sign a two-year deal with the Golden State Warriors.
He made the opening day roster, however, did not make his NBA debut until the second game of the 2010-11 season. This made him the first Harvard graduate to play in the NBA since 1954.
New York Knicks and Emergence
4 of 4Jeremy Lin was grabbed by the Knicks off waivers at the end of December this season, in order to replace an injured Iman Shumpert. After a brief stint in the D-league, Lin was called back up at the end of January.
On February 4, Lin broke out for 25 points, seven assists and five rebounds against the rival New Jersey Nets. In the following game against the Utah Jazz, Lin scored 28 points and dished out eight assists. Then against the struggling Washington Wizards, he continued carrying the Knicks, with a double-double. Lin scored 24 points, with ten assists and four rebounds.
Lin has carried the Knicks in Anthony and Stoudemire's absence. He has led them to a three-game winning streak, and brought hope back to an organization that was let down to start the 2011-12 season.
