Ranking the 5 Most Likely Roster Scenarios for Matt Flynn in 2012
The free-agent quarterback talk this offseason might eventually center around Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, but for now, the man in the middle of the discussion is Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn.
Let's run down the most likely roster scenarios for Flynn this offseason:
1. Free Agent, Signs with Miami Dolphins

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
There's no such thing as a sure thing in the NFL, but Flynn to the Dolphins makes a lot of sense for obvious reasons. Joe Philbin, the only offensive coordinator Flynn has ever known in the NFL, is now the head coach in Miami. And while Matt Moore played well down the stretch, the Dolphins don't have a solidified option at quarterback in 2012.
2. Free Agent, Signs with Seattle Seahawks
Few have mentioned this possibility, but don't forget that current Seahawks GM John Schneider was the Packers director of football operations when Flynn was drafted in 2008.
Two years later, the Seahawks hired Schneider to be their GM, and he and head coach Pete Carroll don't have a long-term option at quarterback. Tarvaris Jackson is still under contract, but the opportunity for Schneider to bring Flynn to Seattle might overrule any allegiance to Jackson.
3. Free Agent, Signs with Washington Redskins
No team in the NFL needs a quarterback more than the Redskins. Many have them trading up in the draft to grab Baylor's Robert Griffin III, and that might be a better option than signing Flynn. But if the Redskins feel the price is too steep to move up, Flynn wouldn't be a terrible backup plan. At the very least, Washington would finally have a future at the game's most important position.
4. Free Agent, Signs with Cleveland Browns
No one knows exactly what Mike Holmgren thinks about his quarterback position, but Holmgren did say that the Browns weren't committing to Colt McCoy as the starting quarterback in 2012. That leaves the window open for the Browns to either draft a quarterback high or sign one in free agency. If he's willing to pay the price, Flynn could be his top option.
5. Franchise tag and trade
I list this option on the top five list for the simple reason that so many media members and fans have talked about the possibility. But it really shouldn't even be included, because a trade of Flynn after franchise tagging him simply is not going to happen. The salary cap doesn't allow it, and GM Ted Thompson isn't one to take the risk of franchising Flynn for $14 million.
I understand why people would be enamored with the idea, as getting compensation immediately and controlling where Flynn goes are attractive effects. But you have to forget about the idea. The Packers will be content letting Flynn walk to the team of his choice and secure a high compensatory pick in next year's draft.
