Super Bowl 2012: 5 Reasons New York-New England Rematch Would Be Ideal
It's funny how so many people were against the LSU-Alabama matchup in the BCS National Championship Game because it was a rematch.
However, aren't rematches the most enticing of games?
Especially when they feature two elite quarterbacks who played in possibly the greatest game of our generation a few years ago?
I mean, let's be serious. Who wants a defensive struggle between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers? When the teams' head coaches are the main storyline of the game, there's a problem.
Here are five reasons why the thought of a New England Patriots and New York Giants rematch is so powerful that it makes our minds blow up in front of our faces.
Two Elite Quarterbacks on Fast Track
1 of 5The Super Bowl takes place on a fast track turf surface in Indianapolis. This means that it's going to be passing galore.
With two great quarterbacks leading their team in Tom Brady and Eli Manning, there's no doubt that there will be many points put up on the scoreboard.
There's nothing better than seeing two quarterbacks pick apart defenses in gunslinging duel.
Even if the game is like the last time, when these two teams met and the final score was 17-14, there is no doubt that both quarterbacks will provide heroics at one point or another.
You can essentially throw defense aside. Whichever quarterback outperforms the other will lift the Lombardi Trophy over his head.
Maximize Television Ratings
2 of 5As mentioned in the opening slide, these two teams are the best offensive teams remaining in the playoffs. It's the best quarterback matchup, and it features two large markets.
Although the Super Bowl is going to get monster ratings anyway, having Eli versus Brady is a lot more extravagant of a matchup than the Harbaugh Bowl. Who wants to watch a pair of coaches dual each other anyway?
It's all about what happens on the field.
These two teams have all the stars. Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Chad Ochocinco and Rob Gronkowski are all recognizable stars that people will want to watch.
Other than Ray Lewis, Ray Rice and Frank Gore, are there really another recognizable stars on the Baltimore Ravens or the San Francisco 49ers?
Not many.
Plus, we all know if Brady is in the Super Bowl, all of our girlfriends will be watching the game intently rather than asking us how much longer until it ends.
The NFL likes that. If it wants to break last year's monster TV rating, Manning versus Brady is the way to go.
The Thought of Eli Beating Brady on His Brother's Home Turf
3 of 5For many years, the Peyton Manning-Tom Brady rivalry attracted football fans to their television screens.
Early on in that rivalry, Manning couldn't buy a win against Brady. The New England Patriots won three Super Bowls, and Manning was known as the guy who couldn't win the big one.
Finally, the tables turned a bit as Manning eventually won a Super Bowl.
Peyton was obviously hurt this year so we didn't see our annual dose of Peyton and Brady.
Instead, we might be getting a Super Bowl featuring Peyton's younger brother trying to defeat his brother's arch-rival for a second time in a Super Bowl, this time on his big bro's home turf.
How exciting of a storyline is that?
Fifty years from now when the two brothers are in their rocking chairs, when Peyton uses his superior stats to poke fun at Eli, the younger Manning can turn right back around and say, "Hey, at least I was able to beat Brady."
Obviously this will only happen if the Giants win, but it's definitely a cool story nonetheless.
Brady and Belichick's Quest for Revenge
4 of 5There is no doubt that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick still don't remember the sting they felt when their bid for perfection was halted by David Tyree's remarkable helmet catch a few years ago.
What better way to avenge that defeat by winning in this year's Super Bowl?
The best part about rematches like this is the whole "revenge factor." The Giants also beat the Patriots in similar come-from-behind fashion in the regular season this year, pouring salt on the Patriots wounds.
If it's one team that's had Brady's number, it's New York. He doesn't want to retire one day seeing that he lost to the same team twice in the Super Bowl.
In order to not get insomnia post-retirement, Brady needs to ease his mind and defeat the Giants. It's a big deal, and no other matchup in this year's playoffs gives us that.
Boston-New York Rivalry
5 of 5No matchup gives us the city rivalry that New England and New York will bring us. We all know about the Red Sox-Yankees, but the Giants-Patriots rivalry is quickly escalating into a heated rivalry of its own.
Boston and New York share hatred in seemingly every sport. Now that the Knicks are a competitive team in the NBA, their rivalry with the Celtics has been renewed. In the NHL, the Rangers and Bruins are two of the best teams in the NHL. And we all know about baseball.
These two cities don't like each other, and that's not news.
A Super Bowl rematch just months after an emotional regular season game will take the rivalry to another level.
