Liverpool FC: The Reds 6 Best English Premier League Goals vs. Manchester United

Karl MatchettOct 12, 2011

Liverpool take on Manchester United at Anfield in one of the English Premier League's biggest and most globally appealing fixtures on Saturday. The match is sure to be an eventful on-the-pitch occasion.

Recent meetings between the two sides have involved plenty of stern challenges, groups of players shoving each other unnecessarily and buckets-full of goals; nine came in the two league fixtures between the sides last season and another 13 came in the four Premier League games before that.

Of course, when you get right down to it, it doesn't really make much difference whether the goal is a winding solo run leaving five defenders trailing in your wake or a two-yard tap in; if you're scoring the winner against Manchester United for Liverpool then you're going to be a hero.

But it sure makes good viewing when someone turns around and nets a complete scorcher.

Here are my top six Liverpool goals scored in the Premier League against Manchester United.

Enjoy!

6. Fernando Torres, Old Trafford, 2009

1 of 6

Loved the goal lots, loved the game more.

As soon as Nemanja Vidic decided to let this ball bounce, we knew he was in trouble. Fernando Torres chased him down, beat him to the ball, controlled it and put it into the far corner of the goal, and Liverpool were well on their way to an epic victory at the home of the enemy.

5. Robbie Fowler, Anfield, 2001

2 of 6

Always nice to see a Manc defender left flapping about on the ground.

The Toxteth Terror was always lethal inside the penalty box on his left foot and makes no mistake, smacking the ball high past Fabien Barthez en route to a home victory.

4. Patrik Berger, Old Trafford, 2000

3 of 6

Paddy Berger netted both home and away during this season against United.

This game, played at Old Trafford, finished 1-1, with Berger earning Liverpool a share of the spoils courtesy of a magnificently struck free kick.

3. Robbie Fowler, Old Trafford, 1995

4 of 6

Coming at around 1:45 on the video, 'God' raided the left hand channel for his second appearance in this top six.

A cross or shot across the face of goal towards the far corner probably would have been the expected, or perhaps even instructed, thing to do, but when you're God, well, anything is possible.

Fowler's second in this game is also worth a watch, should you care to let the video play through.

2. John Arne Riise, Anfield, 2001

5 of 6

Only one word is needed to describe this shot: BOSH.

All together now: I wanna knoooowwww...

1. Steven Gerrard, Anfield, 2001

6 of 6

Coming in the same game as Fowler's goal from 5th place, these aren't two bad goals to lose any game by to be fair.

Steven Gerrard nicks top spot from Riise with an early-career special from range; a real blockbuster of a goal after a lovely little flick from Fowler.
