Why Tottenham Should Give Luka Modric £100,000 Per Week

Ryan DayOct 10, 2011

Tottenham have reportedly opened talks with midfielder Luka Modric in hopes to sign the dynamic midfielder ahead of the transfer window.

The Croatian international is rumored to be playing for a weekly salary of £46,000, but reports out of Tottenham say that the new contract will bring Modric's weekly salary up to a whopping £100,000.

Modric is a rising star in the Premiership, and that's reflected by the interest that several clubs have expressed in him. Chelsea have made no effort to hide their desire for the midfielder, and manager Harry Redknapp has made repeated efforts to persuade the team to re-sign him to a better deal.

There's no doubt that Modric is an impressive player for Spurs, but does he deserve a weekly salary of £100,000?

Modric Is One of the Most Versatile Players in the League

1 of 4

Luka Modric is one of the most versatile players in the Premier League. He can pass short, he can pass long, he probes the midfield, he runs up the middle to support possessions, he sets up attacks, he defends against the inevitable counter-attacks and more.

He's still circulating the highlight reels with his top-shelf goal against Liverpool. His assist against Wolves set up Emmanuel Adebayor's first goal with the team. He's averaging 1.2 shots per game and his tackles and disruption of opposing possessions is second-to-none.

In short, there's very little Modric can't do.

His Passing Keeps Tottenham on the Attack

Luka Modric isn't just one of the best passers in the league. He is the best passer in the league.

Alan Robbins of ADifferentLeague.co.uk reported that Modric's passing accuracy was just under 87% last season, the highest in the Premier League. Anyone who's watched Modric knows he serves as a field general on the pitch, holding the team together, testing the opposing midfield and then keeping possession as Tottenham slowly inches towards another score.

Paired with fellow midfielder Scott Parker, who has the highest passing accuracy so far this year, Modric is one of the biggest reasons that Tottenham is on pace to score 70 goals this season.

Tottenham Must Compete at Negotiating Table to Compete in League

Remember Manchester City? For years, the club was treading water in the middle of the league standings. Despite their wealth, the club has not finished as low as 16th since 2004. Why?

Manchester City's front office was a mess, they were financially irresponsible and the head coaching position was a revolving door. A new stadium had been built in 2003, but fans weren't willing to go because of the team's mediocrity.

But then Abu Dhabi United Group bought the team in 2008. In just 12 months' time transfer spending increased to a level that Blues fans had never seen before. Emmanuel Adebayor and Carlos Tevez were among the high-profile players in City's spending spree. Now the club sits tied with Manchester United for first place in the league.

Tottenham is just as wealthy as Manchester City. Don't believe me? The Guardian reported last May that City made £125 million turnover in the 2009-10 season with only £41 million in debt. Compare that with a Tottenham club that made £119 million in turnover and had £65 million in debt. City is making roughly £40 million more in commercial sales, but Tottenham is actually in a better position because they're only putting 56% of their turnover to wages and salaries whereas City is putting 106% towards wages and salaries.

Their first step into the top-tier of English clubs is signing Modric to the kind of contract that manager Harry Redknapp believes he should get.

Will Modric Stay in Tottenham?

4 of 4

Luka Modric's deal doesn't hang on what I think of him. My opinion means nothing. Modric's agent isn't going into negotiations saying, "Look how much Ryan Day likes my guy!"

But manager Harry Redknapp's does. Redknapp loves the young midfielder, and has made efforts to persuade chairman Daniel Levy to think the same. Will Tottenham pull the trigger? Will the club make Modric one of the highest paid players in the world?

Apart from trying to persuade the reader of Modric's value, I truly think Tottenham will make headlines and sign the midfielder to a deal that's comparable with Wayne Rooney's or Didier Drogba's.

And that's tremendous news for Spurs fans.

What do you guys think?
