La Liga Power Rankings Week 3: Real Madrid Takes the Lead

One more week in the Spanish League has passed and we already got a few surprises.

Remember, the power rankings are not a stat, but rather a combination of recent performances, position in the table, perceived strengths and the opinion of yours truly.

So, yeah, you might not agree with the order in the list, but we can discuss that in the comments section below.

20. Granada
Last week’s position: 19th
Result this week: Malaga 4-0 Granada
They fought hard in their debut against Betis; we can’t say the same about yesterday.

19. Sporting
Last week’s position: 18th
Result this week: Osasuna 2-1 Sporting
Two games, two defeats…and Valencia is coming to town.

18. Zaragoza
Last week’s position: 20th
Result this week: Rayo 0-0 Zaragoza
After conceding six goals in its first game, anything would have been an improvement for Zaragoza.

17. Getafe
Last week’s position: 16th
Result this week: Real Madrid 4-2 Getafe
Considering the blatant mistake by the referee in the penalty that became the 2-1, you just can wonder: what if...

16. Racing
Last week’s position: 17th
Result this week: Racing 0-0 Levante
After a nice performance at Valencia, Racing disappointed at home against Levante.

15. Rayo
Last week’s position: 14th
Result this week: Rayo 0-0 Zaragoza
Another draw for Rayo; not so bad for a such troubled squad.

14. Levante
Last week’s position: 15th
Result this week: Racing 0-0 Levante
Levante started the season with two draws away from home, but next in the schedule is hosting Real Madrid.

13. Villarreal
Last week’s position: ninth
Result this week: Villarreal 2-2 Sevilla
Yes, they had a very tough schedule to start the season, but one point after two games seems too little for a Champions League side.

12. Atletico
Last week’s position: eighth
Result this week: Valencia 1-0 Atlético
Los Colchoneros have yet to score their first goal of the season.

11. Athletic
Last week’s position: fifth
Result this week: Espanyol 2-1 Athletic
Coach Marcelo Bielsa needs more time…but he better hurries up.

10. Mallorca
Last week’s position: seventh
Result this week: Betis 1-0 Mallorca
One victory at home, one defeat away, nothing really interesting to say about this team.

9. Espanyol
Last week’s position: 13th
Result this week: Espanyol 2-1 Athletic
Goalkeeper Cristian Suárez was outstanding against Athletic.

8. Osasuna
Last week’s position: 12th
Result this week: Osasuna 2-1 Sporting
It probably won’t last, but Los Rojillos have had a very good start of the season.

7. Betis
Last week’s position: 11th
Result this week: Betis 1-0 Mallorca
The opposition hasn’t been the toughest, but that doesn’t matter for Betis’ fans: their team is La Liga co-leader.

6. Malaga
Last week’s position: 10th
Result this week: Malaga 4-0 Granada
The Malaga Show has begun.

5. Sevilla
Last week’s position: third
Result this week: Villarreal 2-2 Sevilla
Sevilla is looking very good in this start of the season.

4. Real Sociedad
Last week’s position: sixth
Result this week: Real Sociedad 2-2 Barcelona
The Basque side was impressive in the second half against Barça.

3. Valencia
Last week’s position: fourth
Result this week: Valencia 1-0 Atletico
It hasn’t been pretty, but Los Culés have gotten two victories.
 

2. Barcelona
Last week’s position: first
Result this week: Real Sociedad 2-2 Barcelona
Pep Guardiola usually struggles after the September FIFA date.

1. Real Madrid
Last week’s position: second
Result this week: Real Madrid 4-2 Getafe
For the first time in three years, Los Merengues have a two-point lead over Barcelona—and Diario Marca is so happy abou it t that they made it news.
