Arsenal Transfer News: Could Clint Dempsey Become a Gunner?

Joe TanseyAug 30, 2011

Arsenal are in the running to bring American Clint Dempsey to the Emirates Stadium and there is a high chance Dempsey could be the newest member of the Gunners squad, according to a Goal.com report.

Over the summer, Dempsey has been linked with Paris St. Germain and just this past week with Sevilla.

The Texas native is reportedly looking for the opportunity to play in the Champions League and Arsenal presents that opportunity.

Dempsey could play right away at Emirates in a midfield that has been depleted by transfers, injuries and suspensions.

Cesc Fabregas, Emmannuel Eboue and Samir Nasri left the club this summer, while Alex Song and Emmanuel Frimpong are suspended due to red cards and Jack Wilshere is out with an injury.

Combined with the fact that Andrei Arshavin is likely to leave the club soon and Tomas Rosicky is not the player he once was, Dempsey could see consistent playing time in midfield.

Arsenal will have to put up a good amount of money for Dempsey, as he is highly coveted by Fulham. The Gunners will have to pay a steep price, around eight- to ten-million pounds, to secure the services of Dempsey. It would, however, be a move well worth the money for not only Arsenal, but also for the development of the United States national team if Dempsey plays in the UEFA Champions League this season.
