Arsenal Transfer Talk: Tottenham to Test Arsenal's Resolve in Transfer Window?
Tottenham Hotspurs are set to test Arsenal's resolve in signing Spanish winger Juan Mata.
The North London rivals are set to battle it out for Mata with Tottenham set to make a new bid, according to Guardian.co.uk.
Arsenal have been linked heavily with the European U-21 Championship winning winger in order to bring in replacements for the probable departure of the Gunners captain, Cesc Fabregas. Reports state that Arsene Wenger was ready to break the club record in the transfer window by making a £18million bid.
Mata’s father and agent, Juan Mata Sr, said: “Juan is a wanted man in England. A number of top clubs are after him but he will want to play in the Champions League. I am sure he will do well in England.”
More recent reports stated that World Cup winner Juan Mata has told friends in Spain he is joining the Gunners.
According to an agreement reached when Mata last renewed his contract, Valencia are obliged to sell to a foreign club that matches the €21m bar before Monday. Spurs have made an offer that exceeds that minimum fee in order to strengthen their hand.
Though Tottenham's improved offer may attract Valencia, the prospect of playing in Champions League will surely play a major role in Mata's decision, if he is set for a move to England.
