Arsenal Transfers: Top 10 Fantasy Deals Gunners Fans Would Love to See

Mikhail TurnerJul 26, 2011

The one thing Arsenal fans have going for them right now, amidst all the taunts from other 'Big Four' fans and the up and comers like Manchester City, is hope.

Hope that Arsene Wenger knows what he is doing.

Hope that there will be no midseason collapse.

And hope that, at the end of the season, the drought will end.

Another thing fans can hope for are signings.

The Gunners have been linked with numerous players, young and old, superstar, and not so superstar.

Going with two players for each position—goalkeeper, defense, defensive midfield, attacking midfield and forward—I present some of the top transfers that would have a lot of Gunners fans salivating.

These are not necessarily players that have been linked to the club, but they are the players that are likely to have Gunners fans go from hopeful to confident.

If Wenger has the money—which he supposedly does—and is willing to use it, these are the top 10 fantasy deals for Gunners fans, regardless of availability.

So let's enter fantasy land.

Maarten Stekelenburg

1 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 9.7 million pounds

Age: 28

League Appearances: 173

European Appearances: 52

International Appearances: 40

Many Gunners fans might agree with Wenger that the goalkeeper position is fine.

I am not one of these people.

Stekelenburg has been linked with Arsenal in the past and would come with a great amount of experience.

After years of service at Ajax he seems ready to move on, and has let it be known where he would like to go. At this point such a deal looks unlikely.

If his price is correct, he is definitely the most attainable person on this list.

Hugo Lloris

2 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 15 million pounds

Age: 24

League Appearances: 180

European Appearances: 30

International Appearances: 23

We are definetly entering fantasy land here. Lloris's price tag alone would get in the way of a deal—if it hasn't already.

There is no need to explain why the capture of Lloris would tingle the spine of many an Arsenal fan.

With him behind the defense we might not even need any more new defenders. Well, maybe.

Per Mertestacker

3 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 8.8 million pounds

Age: 26

League Appearances: 217

European Appearances: 53

International Appearances: 86

The transfer price seems a bit low considering Cahill is being dangled for 17 million pounds, and Samba for 12 million pounds, but it could be because he is in the last year of his contract.

Unlike the other two, he is not familiar with the EPL and is a bit on the slow side. However, his height and experience would surely make him an asset alongside Vermealen in the back.

If Wenger decides to turn his sights elsewhere, he may look to the Germans.

Jan Vertonghen

4 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 10. 5 million pounds

Age: 24

League Appearances: 136

European Appearances: 34

International Appearances: 28

Vertonghen has been described as the best fit for Arsenal defensively.

He is Belgian, like Vermaelen. He is from Ajax, like Vermaelen.

Of all the options he definitely has the technical qualities to fit in, as well as the experience and familiarity with our best central defender.

Unfortunately he seems set to stay in Amsterdam.

Things can change quickly in this transfer climate and if Wenger became serious about him, Vertonghen could change his mind.

Daniele De Rossi

5 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 27.5 million Pounds

Age: 28

League Appearances: 249

European Appearances: 58

International Appearances: 55

De Rossi is a definite FIFA or Football Manager buy. He has not been linked with Arsenal as much this summer compared to the past.

Roma are ringing in the changes to challenge for Seria A next season, but it is highly unlikely that De Rossi will be one of those out the door.

It's still a nice fantasy though.

Lassana Diarra

6 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 16 million pounds

Age: 26

League Appearances: 112

European Appearances: 28

International Appearances: 23

I may be one of the few who still wants Diarra back.

He may have been a bit petulant during his time with the Gunners, but he could really use a new lease on life, and his familiarity with the Premiership and Arsenal would be a plus.

The price tag would get in the way though, and it is unlikely Mourinho would let him leave despite his berth in the pecking order at Real Madrid.

Eden Hazard

7 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 20 million pounds

Age: 20

League Appearances: 109

European Appearances: 21

International Appearances: 20

Lille would not let go two of their most priced assets in one season, especially not to the same club. Before Gervinho was brought in many wanted to see Hazard join the fold.

He seems to be considered the brighter talent of the two, but Gervinho could do really well at Arsenal. If everything goes well.

He is still very young, but with Samir Nasri and Fransesc Fabregas gone he could eventually pass through the Emirates doors by next season.

Juan Mata

8 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 22 million pounds

Age: 23

League Appearances: 129

European Appearances: 28

International Appearances: 11

Earlier this summer there were strong rumors that Mata would be subject to a bid by the Gunners. Those rumors have cooled off a bit, and it seems that Santi Cazorla may be taking his place.

I would much prefer Mata over Cazorla if given the option, and I think many Arsenal fans would agree.

That being said such a deal is unlikely unless either Fabregas or Nasri leaves and, for now, it looks like Wenger is keeping hold of both.

This report does keep hope alive.

Karim Benzema

9 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 22 million pounds

Age: 23

League Appearances: 172

European Appearances: 32

International Appearances: 32

For some reason Arsenal fans are adamant that we need another scoring option.

Maroune Chamakh's light fizzled out pretty quickly with Robin Van Persie's return, but that does not mean he was a bust.

Since adding Gervinho, Wenger seems content with our attacking options, and I agree.

That being said, the prospect of Benzema joining the fold is an intriguing one, though very unlikely.

Radamel Falcao

10 of 10

Possible Transfer Price: 22 million pounds

Age: 25

League Appearances: 130

European Appearances: 24

International Appearances: 19

Falcao was an integral part of the Porto squad in the 2010/11 season. He scored goals left and right, while attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

He was also one of the few stars of the recent Copa America who performed—minus his penalty miss in the quarterfinals.

He has the attributes to fit into the Arsenal system and could make a good contribution.
