Manchester United Transfers: 6 Alternatives to Wesley Sneijder as Deal Goes Cold
Manchester United's bid to bring Wesley Sneijder to Old Trafford appears to have stalled.
Sir Alex Ferguson told media to "forget it" in a press conference yesterday, hinting that the financial implications have proved a stumbling block.
If terms can't be agree for the Inter Milan midfielder, United may well look elsewhere as they seek to bolster a midfield now without the retired Paul Scholes.
Here are six possible alternatives to Sneijder...
Bastian Schweinsteiger
1 of 6United were heavily linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in January.
This recent article at the Daily Star website claims United have renewed their interest in the German international midfielder.
The 26-year-old is said to be admired by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and viewed as a possible replacement for Scholes.
There's even talk Dimitar Berbatov could be used as a makeweight in a possible deal.
Juan Mata
2 of 6Manchester United and Arsenal have both reportedly registered their interest in Valencia midfielder Juan Mata.
According to this article, the 23-year-old is being priced at £20 million.
Mata is said to idolize Ryan Giggs, which could help United's cause, and with Nani linked with a possible move away from United there could be space on the left of midfield to fill.
Paulo Henrique Ganso
3 of 6Brazilian midfielder Ganso is reportedly a target for a host of the world's top clubs.
The 21-year-old playmaker, who currently plays for Santos in Brazil, is linked to Manchester United, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Paris Saint-German according to TheSportsCampus.
The piece goes on to say his preferred destination is AC Milan, but who's to say Sir Alex Ferguson can't convince him otherwise.
Samir Nasri
4 of 6Arsenal's French international midfielder Samir Nasri has been linked to a move to Manchester United this summer, although it seems highly unlikely after comments made by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
"What is certain is that we won’t be selling Nasri to Manchester United," Wenger said.
Ferguson admitted the 24-year-old was unlikely to be Old Trafford next season, but did manage to ruffle Wenger's feathers by saying he believed Nasri had agreed to go somewhere.
Now the Sneijder deal is looking precarious, will United have another go? You wouldn't rule it out.
Marek Hamsic
5 of 6According to this article at caughtoffside.com, United are considering a £35 million bid for Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik.
The 23-year-old Slovakian is reportedly seen as just the kind of player United need to replace Scholes.
Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be a big admirer, and Hamsik himself has been quoted as saying he may not be able to turn down a move from United.
Luka Modric
6 of 6Tottenham are insisting that Luka Modric is not for sale this summer, but according to Click Manchester, Manchester United may be ready to test their resolve.
One suggestion is that United will offer cash plus former Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov to get the Croatian midfielder, who's seen by many as the ideal replacement for Scholes.
