Arsenal FC: 10 Reasons for Arsenal Fans to Get Excited About Gervinho
Arsenal has made its first signing of what will hopefully be a productive summer.
After elongated negotiations and many statements from the Ivorian concerning his love for Arsenal, Gervinho is a Gunner.
Overall, Gervinho could have a significant impact on the squad—and the Premier League—next season.
This signing is good for Arsenal for a variety of reasons. Here they are.
Versatility
1 of 10If Arsene Wenger decides to stick with the 4-3-3 or go with a 4-2-3-1, Gervinho will be comfortable, as he has played in a similar setup with Lille.
He can play either to the left or right of the striker, as well as in the hole right behind him.
This versatility can help the squad adapt to situations in game and give the opposition trouble.
More Attacking Options
2 of 10This goes almost hand in hand with versatility.
Provided both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri stay, Wenger would face tough choices as to who to put in his squad.
Gervinho could end up on the bench. But a starting lineup with him, Robin Van Persie, Fabregas, Nasri and a fifth attacking player would be formidable.
Fabregas and Nasri can co-exist in the middle, allowing Gervinho to be on the wing with either Andrei Arshavin or Theo Walcott.
Youth
3 of 10While Gervinho may not be as young as the usual Wenger transfers, at 24, he is still a few years away from his prime.
This transfer is as much about the future as it is the present.
Experience
4 of 10Gervinho does come with a good amount of experience.
He has played in one World Cup, a number of Africa Cup of Nations and the Europa League.
He may not have the accolades of some of his more illustrious teammates, but he can hold his own.
He Is a Winner
5 of 10Yes, he has only won the one Ligue 1 title, as well as the Coupe de France. But that is still one more title than the majority of the current squad.
Fresh off the championship-winning campaign, Gervinho will bring a new character to the squad.
Goals
6 of 10Goals are not necessarily what Arsenal needs, but Gervinho is a good finisher. He scored 15 goals with Lille last season and could well reach double digits again.
With the likes of Van Persie and (hopefully) Nasri and Fabregas threading through balls, Gervinho will get his share of chances.
Assists
7 of 10Just like he got double digits in goals, Gervinho provided a number of assists for his teammates.
With a host of more talented players around him, he could possibly increase his productivity even more.
Skills
8 of 10One would expect a player with a Brazilian nickname to have skills.
And Gervinho has a lot.
He has the ability to beat his man with tricks or with pace, and this can lead to a great number of opportunities for him and his teammates.
The Wenger Factor
10 of 10Any comparison to Marouane Chamakh is unwarranted.
These are two different types of players, and Gervinho is definitely a better fit for the Arsenal game.
Wenger has honed many great attacking talents, and he is likely to get the best out of the Ivorian.
