Copa America 2011 Results: Why Anyone Can Win Wide Open Tournament
Copa America 2011 Results Prove This Year's Competition is Wide Open
With the two favorites in the 2011 Copa America tournament off to poor starts, it would be no surprise to see a team like Chile shock the soccer world.
So far, Chile and Colombia were the only teams to win their opening matches, both against the CONCACAF invites of Mexico and Costa Rica.
Excluding Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru, it truly feels like any of these teams could find their way into the finals.
Bolivia played a very effective match against Argentina, who needed a terrific volley just to get a draw out of the match.
The other favorite, Brazil, could not find the net against a young, up-and-coming Venezuela team. Venezuela is using this tournament as a warm-up to World Cup qualifying, where they will look to finally qualify for the big stage.
Mexico would have been a legitimate threat to win this tournament if not for the team missing eight players due to suspension. Peru and Costa Rica are not considered threats at all, but the Ticos played a solid match against Colombia when they were down a man, while Peru scored an early goal to help them secure a point against Uruguay.
If Brazil and Uruguay don't start playing the game they are accustomed to playing, there could very well be a surprise winner of this year's tournament.
Brazil is looking to win their third straight Copa America, but they did not look like champions whatsoever in their first game of the tournament.
At this point, Chile looks like the best team in the tournament. They dominated a short-handed Mexican side that was lucky to only lose 2-1. Chile controlled the ball for a majority of the game and dominated the pace of the game.
Chile will have a difficult test in their next game as they are set to take on Uruguay, but if they come away with three more points there is no doubt they could win this tournament.
With Argentina and Brazil both featuring new coaches and young players, the tournament will remain wide open and there could be a surprising winner.
