Manchester United Transfer Rumors: 8 Additions Who Can Bring Another EPL Title

Tim KeeneyJun 26, 2011

After winning the English Premier League last season, one question remains for Manchester United: will they be able to replace their lost talent and make another run at the title?

With the retirement of Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes and the expected departure of John O'Shea and Darron Gibson, United is losing quite a bit of talent.

Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea are on their way in, so it's not like the Red Devils are preparing for a drop in the EPL.

They very well may still be at the top of the EPL, but Liverpool has improved, Chelsea will most likely improve, and Manchester City and Arsenal aren't going anywhere.

Here's a look at some players that could put United over the hump and help them repeat this season.

Note that this isn't necessarily a list of the most likely players to join United, but a list of players who have both been linked to Man U and would greatly improve the team's weaknesses.

Charlie Adam, Blackpool

It appears that Liverpool is close to signing midfielder Charlie Adam, but Manchester United has shown interest in Adam, who wouldn't be a bad fit with the Red Devils.

Adam, a central midfielder, had a nice season with Blackpool, scoring 12 times in 35 appearances. The 25-year-old could fill a hole in the United's central midfield at a much lower price than some of their other targets. Since United has already spent a good amount on Ashley Young, price could be an important factor.

Gareth Bale, Tottenham

2 of 8

It was recently reported that if teammate Luka Modric departs, then Gareth Bale will also leave. Rumors of a move to Manchester United have died down as of late, but with this news, expect them start up again.

Manchester United is pretty solid in the back, and they have already signed Phil Jones. However, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are all 30 or older, and they still don't know how the young Jones will mesh with the defense.

Gareth Bale was originally known as a left back but, because of his skills on the ball, was turned into a left midfielder. Bale's versatility and ability to play all over the field would make him a nice piece in Manchester United's title run.

Jack Rodwell, Everton

3 of 8

The Everton midfielder has been linked to many different clubs, and Manchester United is one of them.

Rodwell, who was originally seen as a future top center back, has recently been deployed as a defensive midfielder. The 20-year-old would give United a young option for the center of the pitch who has the ability to drop back whenever needed.

Manchester United are certainly pretty set on defense, but there's no question that Rodwell in the midfield would improve the team overall.

Luka Modric, Tottenham

4 of 8

Luka Modric is possibly the best available player at Manchester United's biggest hole.

The Croatian would immediately give the Red Devils the versatile player on the middle of the pitch they need.

Modric has been known to be a quality attacking midfielder, but he also has the ability to drop back and play defense. He would be a great fit for the Scholes-sized hole in the central midfield.

Wesley Sneijder, Inter Milan

5 of 8

Wesley Sneijder would fit into a more attacking role than Modric, but he is still certainly a great fit for United.

The Netherlands international has been known as one of the best midfielders in the world over the past couple of years. As a central attacking midfielder, he would add a scary dimension to the Man U offense.

If the Red Devils pick him up, they would certainly be regarded as a favorite for the EPL title.

Samir Nasri, Arsenal

6 of 8

The Samir Nasri-to-United rumors have certainly died down as of late, but the Red Devils would be hard-pressed to find a better fit for their midfield.

The 24-year-old Frenchman has spent most of the last couple of years playing as a wing, where there wouldn't really be a spot for him in Manchester. However, earlier in his career, Nasri proved that he could play the role of central attacking midfielder quite well.

Nasri could revert to that role for United and would instantly improve the midfield.

Alexis Sanchez, Udinese

7 of 8

Alexis Sanchez is wanted by pretty much every team, and the chances of United getting him seem to be decreasing by the day. However, if Man U could land the Chilean striker, he would almost certainly improve the team.

Especially if Dimitar Berbatov is on the way out.

If Berbatov leaves, then United will essentially be down to two strikers: Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney.

Those are certainly two world-class strikers, but the addition of a third wouldn't be a bad idea.

Sanchez is strong, fast and agile, and seems ready to mix it up in the EPL.

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

8 of 8

It's obviously not an addition, but might a Wayne Rooney position change help out Manchester United?

Much of this slideshow has focused on central midfielders or central attacking midfielders—arguably United's biggest hole. After the addition of Ashley Young, it's questionable how much money Sir Alex will be able to put into a new central midfielder. They may have to fill that hole from within.

Move Rooney to more of a creative attacking midfield position, and you have the potential for an intriguing lineup. He has always given performances that have hinted he can be effective in the midfield, and it might be interesting to see him there.

It's all just thinking out loud, however. Chances of this are certainly low, but an interesting alternative to spending money.
