Romelu Lukaku Set to Sign for Chelsea

Will J BakerJun 8, 2011

For months the footballing world has been raving about the talents of 18 year old Belgium and Anderlecht striker, Romelu Lukaku.

He has already been labeled the "next Didier Drogba" and he has a very impressive scoring record of 39 goals in just two seasons for one of Belgium's premier teams.

With rumors of Drogba's impending departure still doing the rounds, Chelsea's move for Lukaku could signal the beginning of the end for the Chelsea legend.

Lukaku has revealed that he is a Chelsea fan and that it would be a "lifelong dream" to earn his keep at Stamford Bridge which could be a key factor in his decision.

AC Milan and Real Madrid are also interested in Lukaku but Chelsea have drawn first blood and look set to secure his signature this weekend.

Anderlecht have revealed they will not accept anything less than £20 million for their most prized asset but that will not stop Abramovich who has put the Hiddink negotiations on hold while a group of negotiators from Chelsea travel to Belgium this weekend to enter into talks with the young star.

It will be interesting to see what role Lukaku will be given at Chelsea who have been notoriously sub-par in nurturing young players with Scott Sinclair being a prime example of a youth product that was not given the opportunities and now has a successful career elsewhere.

If Guus Hiddink is appointed as Ancelotti's replacement, which looks more and more likely, then there is a good chance that Lukaku will be given a first team role to please Abramovich.

His tender age should not put the club off about throwing him in at the deep end.

He is a natural born goalscorer who could be the perfect foil for Torres in his quest to finally throw off the tag of "worst signing in the history of football".

There is still the possibility that Lukaku would be loaned out but everything points to the fact that he is ready for major league football.
