Liverpool Legend Kenny Dalglish Reportedly Offered Two-Year Managerial Contract

Thomas AtzenhofferMar 14, 2011

News broke yesterday that Liverpool are believed to have approached Kenny Dalglish with a managerial contract offer for two years. Dalglish is thought to have been expecting a four-year deal, and in light of the two-year offer, he will be negotiating his benefits with the club.

"King Kenny," as he has been enshrined by his Liverpool fans, spent 15 years in management between 1985 and 2000. His time began at Liverpool where he led the Reds to three League Titles, two FA Cups and four Charity Shields.

Following his resignation at Liverpool in 1991, he led Blackburn Rovers to promotion and then a Premier League Title in 1995. The remaining years of his first managerial stint were between Newcastle and Celtic where he won his last piece of silverware with the Hoops in 2000 when they lifted the Scottish League Cup.

Dalglish returned to Liverpool under Rafael Benitez as a member of the youth teams staff and was appointed a club ambassador at that time. It was never believed he would be brought in and have to serve as savior for the club, but so far, since his time in the hot seat after Roy Hodgsen's departure, he has done just that.

Having made his stamp on the club, he has led quite a revival of the moral of the players, fans and owners. The loss of Fernando Torres seemed a blow to the club, however, Dalglish handled it well with the arrival of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll to take his place.

The out of sorts Spaniard is still to give any weight to Chelsea's attack since his departure from Anfield.

Dalglish took the club on an unbeaten run for seven games before a 3-1 loss to West Ham United. Then he countered that the following week with a 3-1 thrashing of old foe Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United that more than likely secured his contract opportunity.

Having brought the club back from the bottom half of the table to sixth position in the English Premier League, he has given the club a chance at the UEFA Europa League next season.

There is still an extremely slim outside chance of overtaking Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea to earn a fourth place finish and UEFA Champions League football, but it is unlikely.

His charges will face Portugal side Sporting Braga this Thursday in hopes of continuing their run at the only piece of Silverware the club could lift this season. They will face a 0-1 aggregate deficit at home with a place in the last eight on the line in front of the Kop without their Captain Steven Gerrard.

Dalglish will look to continue to mold the side to his image more so now than ever as he looks to be permanently installed for the next few seasons.

He has already made it known that no one is bigger than the club, and I look to see him make many changes over the summer as the new regime under Fenway Sports Group (Formerly New England Sports Ventures) looks to take the Reds back to the top using the same style of sporting model that brought the Boston Red Sox back to prominence in Major League Baseball.

The appointment of Dalglish will no doubt give more stability to the squad knowing that their new leader will be staying with them. It will also allow the club to start making more long term plans for the future.
