Mesut Özil to Real Madrid: How It Changes Balance of Power in La Liga

Maxx GAug 17, 2010

Real Madrid completed one of the greatest signings of the transfer window by signing German sensation Mesut Özil from Werder Bremen for a price in the region of €20m.

Özil, the 21-year-old, has won many praises and plaudits after his wonder performance in South Africa during World Cup 2010 for Germany and was tracked by many of the biggest clubs of the world, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and others. But Real manager Jose Mourinho finally won the race.

Özil will have his medical test on Wednesday at Madrid and will be then another strong addition to Mourinho's new army.

Özil had only one year left in his contract with his club Werder Bremen, so his club wanted to sell him off this season only rather than allow a free transfer in the next season. Bremen wanted a higher fee, but somehow the deal was fixed at a lower price than claimed.

This was indeed a great move for Real, as other clubs failed to secure the move for Özil at a cheap €20m. Manchester United needed a playmaker badly to fill in for aging Paul Scholes, and Arsenal needed someone too to be a good long-term replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who may be leaving the club next season. Both these clubs could not land the wonder man though.

Özil has been a sensation in Germany both for the senior team and before that for the under-21 squad. He stands out with his unique passing ability, attacking mentality, super ball control, and strong scoring ability. He can play as a central attacking midfielder and can also fit in the role of a second striker if needed.

Özil spearheaded the German attacks in WC 2010 that ended the dreams of Argentina and England and also scored the unstoppable long-range shot against Ghana in the Group D finals. In a nutshell, he is a treat to watch and is a fire in the name of the modern attacking football.

Mourinho will make his newest signing with the addition of Özil to his squad, having already signed Angel di Maria, Ricardo Carvalho, Pedro Leon, and Sami Khedira. Thus the Real squad will be "real" strong with the new additions in all positions of the squad. Sergio Canales has also joined Madrid and will provide great depths to the team's attack.

To be honest and specific, the La Liga is a play of power of two superheroes, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Barcelona is strong and has been the strongest presently with players like Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, and Lionel Messi. But it is perhaps the evolution time. It is Jose Mourinho, and he can stop players like Messi and make them look ordinary by his strong strategies.

We have seen that with the manager in Inter Milan. Now, with a strong squad and players of his choice in Real, Mourinho will be again in his business to make wonders and establish supremacy.

The attacking options for Mourinho are strong enough to upset any defense, and the new young team will bring a lot of energy into the play with creative ones like di Maria to aggressive attacking options like Özil. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas is in super form from WC 2010, and the defense looks good too.

Lionel Messi has new reasons to think and tension. It will be the game of stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Özil, and even younger sensations like Canales versus the Argentine "new God" who lost in the match against Germany. Where was Messi anyway?

So, do we see a balance of power shifting towards the Real Madrid? Is it going to be the revival of the golden days? Are Özil and the new army the apt nuclear warhead for winning El Classico? We wait for a wonderful and exciting season ahead in La Liga.
