Barcelona in the Red, Club Fails To Pay Player-Wages

Zaakir HoosenJul 8, 2010

Not very long ago, we heard about the remarkable financial position Barcelona found itself in; today, we seen the opposite.

Barcelona's newly elected President, Sandro Rosell, revealed that the club is in debt and needs to improve its current financial woes.

According to his statement, he (Rosell) said: ā€œWe found the Club in debt and with cash flow tensions, but we’re sorting that out.ā€

After splashing out the cash last season on Zlatan Ibrahimovich and their latest signing in David Villa, has the Spanish Champion reached the limit?

Now, the club failed to pay players at the end of June...

Barcelona continue to chase Arsenal captain despite their financial difficulties, but the question is, why? If the current crop isn't getting what's due to them, why bring in more players?

Barcelona have taken a loan of £125m in order to pay their players for the month of June, and the sales of Yaya Toure and Dmitro Chygrynskiy will also contribute to the debt crisis.

"The banks know that we have a business plan that will allow them to recover the money. The club is not bankrupt because it generates income," Rosell said.Ā

The president is also trying to comfort members of the club, fans, and all interested parties, but is this good enough?

ā€œThe membership needn’t be concerned. The Club isn’t bankrupt. This week we’ll have everything in place to impose a policy of austerity to be able to make savings in unnecessary areas and meet very important commitments such as paying the wages of our players, coaches, and employees,ā€ said Rosell.

Sandros will now fly to South Africa where he will have a number of meetings with regards to how he can overcome the problem. Among the people he hopes to meet is the Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, to discuss the sale of Cesc Fabregas.

Roswell also needs to finalise the issue with current TV deals, but it seems that certain monies owed have not been paid to FC Barcelona.

It might seem shocking to many as Barcelona don't even have a shirt sponsor, but with Madrid looking to challenge them in the upcoming season, many would hope and pray the men behind the scenes sort out the financial mess.
