2010 FIFA World Cup: With England's Dreams in Doubt, Wayne Rooney Must Step Up
Going into the 2010 FIFA World Cup, England really fancied their chances of possibly bringing home the World Cup title for the second time in their history.
With a great manager in Fabio Capello, and players such as Steven Gerrard and John Terry on their squad, England fancied their chances to do well in the World Cup.
But there is one player on the Three Lions that was going to be the difference if England were to make it to their second World Cup final: Wayne Rooney.
Overall, Rooney is among the top five players in the world, and had a great season with Manchester United as he nearly won the Red Devils a record fourth straight Premier League title.
Rooney has also excelled for the English National Team, as he has scored 25 goals in 62 matches, and is now playing in his second World Cup.
But now with England's final group stage match coming up against Slovenia tomorrow at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, England must win in order to clinch a spot in the round of 16.
And right now, England will need Wayne Rooney to be at his best.
However, Rooney has not been able to play like he did with Manchester United back in February and March, and as a result, England have had limited success with only one goal scored in the entire tournament.
Rooney now also has the extra pressure of succeeding against the Green Dragons after saying this coming off the pitch after England's draw with Algeria last Friday: "Nice to see your home fans boo you; that's loyal supporters."
Of course with that quote, there has been even more criticism of Rooney since the draw back in England, and it appears that England are breaking apart at the seams.
And this especially comes true after John Terry's request for "a player revolt" over the last weekend, causing even more criticism of the national team back at home.
Right now, England desperately needs that win, and Wayne Rooney alone is the only player that could supply a victory.
So far, Rooney has never scored in the FIFA World Cup, and has been criticised way more than cheered for what he has done on the football pitch.
Now with this important match, it will be up to Wayne Rooney to get England to get into the round of 16.
If he fails, so will the Three Lions as their World Cup dream will end.
