Slovakia vs. Paraguay 2010 World Cup Live Blog: Scores and Analysis
Welcome football fans, Bryan Sakakeeny here to guide you through today's Slovakia vs. Paraguay match.
It's a new day for everyone in Group F. All four teams drew their opening match 1-1 so the second match is a vital game for all teams to get a leg up. Paraguay and Slovakia are no exception.
Both teams scored first in their opening matches before succumbing to late heroics by their counterparts, it'll be interesting to see who can jump out to the early lead here today.
Feel free to comment on the goings-on of the matches or give me a shout at any time, your thoughts are what make these blogs successful.
As always, enjoy the match!
An impressive performance from Paraguay. As good as they made it look, they appeared equally as comfortable. Points were always going to be precious in this group and Paraguay made thier presence felt with a big win. Slovakia was abysmal all game long but give credit to the attack of Paraguay and handling nicely the task that was dealt to them.
93'- Vittek finds a bit of space and fires a shot, it's turned over the bar by Villar. Slovakia's first shot on target comes in the 93rd minute.
92'- A telling game for what many fans thought would be a snoozer. I'd hate to have missed this game and then face Paraguay in the knockout stage. They look very comfortable in the driver's seat.
91'- Four minutes to be added on. Proverbial gravy for the Paraguayans.
90'- Slovakia has been poor today, but as they say: You can only beat what is in front of you. Paraguay has done that expertly today, hat's off to them.
88'- Vera is replaced by Barreto. Great game for the initial goal scorer today, he was prevalent all around the attacking third as well.
86'- GOAL! Free kick to the back post is nodded back into the middle. After some confusion and a few touches. Riveros drives it into the back of the net. Way too much time for Riveros at the top of the 18. Surely this must be it.
84'- Yellow card is shown to Weiss for arguing against the awarding of a free kick.
84'- Miroslav Stoch comes on for Salata, a defender for an attacker. Finally, some intent from Slovakia.
79'- Paraguay still on the attack, the best defense is a good offense apparently. Cardozo comes on to replace Barrios. Another striker added to the formation.
77'- Torres with a well-struck shot from distance. Mucha dives to tip it over but it was always sailing.
77'- You have to like Paraguay's chances against New Zealand if they pull this one out. Slovakia doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell if they play like this against the Italians. They look about as threatening as a puppy.
75'- Slovakia plays a back pass to Mucha, the clearance is deflected by a Paraguayan player giving chase, they're just showing more effort right now.
72'- Expert buildup play by Paraguay. Nifty cross played in by Santa Cruz, Vera heads it viciously into the ground, forcing Mucha to do one of those awkward dives. Fortunately for him the attempt dribbles wide.
69'- Ah, there we are. Sestak is taken off by Holosko. Sestak has seen better days than this one.
67'- Nelson Haedo Valdez is replaced by Aureliano Torres, interesting that Paraguay is the first side making a change, and an attacker no less.
66'- Paraguay look far too comfortable at this stage in the match, more urgency needs to be shown. For their sake and mine, I'm drifting off to sleep watching this.
64'- Nothing direct comes from the corner but Slovakia is able to sustain pressure until it's finally collected by Villar.
63'- Corner won by Slovakia. Is the ignition switch finally turned on?
60'- Paraguay played the role of underdog against Italia, here they look like a very confident team that will only be satisfied by progressing to the knockout stage.
57'- Sustained pressure from Slovakia, it amounts to nothing. I'd expect a host of changes to be made soon in an attempt to change the face of the Slovakian attack.
55'- Weiss seems to be the only Slovak keen on netting and equalizer, he'll be key if they want to get anything out of this match.
54'- Harkes again talking up the U.S. and Michael Bradley. Is this a ploy by ESPN? Or is he just that biased?
52'- Paraguay look confident in defense, motivation no doubt coming from having a lead to protect.
46'- Slovakia looking aggressive right from the whistle as Sestak goes into the book for a late tackle on Riveros.
46'- Play resumes as the second half gets underway.
8:16EST- Paraguay has dominated thus far. The Slovaks have gone forward with confidence a couple of time but have never looked really threatening. They need to wake up and realize that this is it for them if they don't turn it around. Especially with the group being so tight and Italy looming.
45'- Enrique Vera finds his way into the ref's little book. One minute to be added on.
43'- Paraguay foul in the box, no, it's not the same ref as the U.S. game. That doesn't stop John Harkes from jumping at the chance to talk about his beloved Yanks, though.
42'- Durica with a reckless challenge from the ground, he's shown a yellow card. Crucial chance for Paraguay, especially with half time coming up.
38'- Paraguay puts together a nice counterattack, Santa Cruz with a low shot that could've almost sealed the deal, even at this point. Luckily for the Slovaks, Mucha was up to the task.
36'- Slovakia with a free kick that amounts to nothing, they have been controlling possession these past few minutes if that is any consellation.
33'- You'd expect Slovakia to have a fire lit under their butts after going down early. On form I wouldn't expect them to do much against Italy's defense.
32'- Finally, Slovakia with a little surge forward, nicely delivered cross into the box but no one is on the end of it.
27'- GOAL! Barrios opens up the defense with a lovely nutmeg through ball, it finds the feet of Vera nicely, who finishes calmly despite being taken down. I saw this coming, Slovakia just hasn't seemed to have shown up today.
25'- Haedo Valdez with a strike. The low attempt was always going wide though. Paraguay appears more creative at the moment, they'll need to get Valdez involved more.
24'- Nifty little back heel in the attacking third from Barrios, he finds Vera who returns it to him, unfortunately the Landon Donovan-esque strike is well high.
20'- Riveros of Paraguay finds a ball laid off to him at the end of a nice Paraguayan run. Shot is on target but is no trouble at all for the goalkeeper.
19'- Free kick for Paraguay is driven nicely to the back post, half a chance there for Da Silva but danger is averted.
16'- I may have spoken too soon, much better from Slovakia. Weiss feeds Sestak from the flank, Sestak is tackled.
16'- This game has been like children's football so far, no one seems able to construct an attack.
15'- John Harkes doesn't seem too excited about the match in prospect, possibly because the U.S. isn't playing.
13'- Cagey match so far, I can't deal if that's characteristic (because they both tied 1-1 previously) Or uncharacteristic (because the group is up for grabs).
10'- Durica receives the ball with options but can only find the stands.
7'- Slovakia has some scary looking dudes, Sestak and Hamsik appear quite evil.
3'- Early shot from Paraguay! Santa Cruz tries the near post but Mucha is up to the challenge and pushes it behind. Ensuing corner is dealt with easily.
1'- And we're off, the first meeting ever between these two nations.
7:29EST- We're live
