2010 FIFA World Cup: How Ivory Coast May Upset This Summer?

So far during the year, many upsets have hit the world of professional sports; from Butler beating Syracuse in the Sweet 16 round on the way to its first ever NCAA finals appearance, to the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL who beat the n0 1 seeded team of the east and eventually eliminating the defending Stanley Cup champs, to Lyon knocking out Real Madrid in the round of 16 of this year's UEFA Champions league, etc...just to name a few. We may be in for another upset this summer as countries are preparing to go head to head with each at sport's biggest platform. Unless living under a rock or on a different planet, one must be well aware of this summer's massive event. This is the first time, perhaps since the release of Nelson Mandela, that the continent of Africa is being host to an event of such global magnitude. I'm talking about the 2010 Fifa World Cup which is kicking off a week from tomorrow.

Seeing that it is the first time Africa hosts the World Cup, many of the participating African countries are bringing their A-game to match the level of the rest of the world and among them Ivory Coast may just be the one to continue this year's tradition of upsets. This is a high caliber team made up of some of soccer's best talent making a name for themselves in various leagues across Europe. Among those names is the superstar Chelsea striker Didier Drogba who led his club to its 6th FA Cup title earlier this year. He has the skills, finesse, speed and flair to be placed among the best strikers in the history of the game. A hero in his country as well as across the continent, Drogba is a two time African player of the year, current Premier League Golden Boot and his country's all time scorer. He is definitely a threat who can destroy and annihilate any defense line in the game of soccer today. He will not be the only one to achieve this, Salomon Kalou who is a solid midfielder and also his teammate at Chelsea, will be running the offence along with Yaya Toure; terrific midfielder from FC Barcelona. Other notables are Emmanuel Eboue, Kolo Toure and Bakary Kone who are all stars across Europe whose skills are being coveted by many franchises.

This will be an interesting tournament and if recent sport history is bound to repeat itself, it will definitely do it with Ivory Coast who will shock the world and have Drogba lift that golden hardware on July 11.
