Arsenal Transfer Prospects: Yoann Gourcuff or Joe Cole To Replace Cesc?

Although Cesc Fabregas has not yet departed Arsenal to play for his boyhood club Barcelona, Arsene Wenger is still considering options if the inevitable does occur shortly.

Many rumors have been circling over who is a potential replacement for the Arsenal captain, and Wenger has undoubtedly been searching for an ideal replacement for his irreplaceable.

Two names that have sprung to many fans' and critics' minds are talented Bordeaux starlet Yoann Gourcuff and Chelsea playmaker Joe Cole. The pair would be quality replacements in the central midfield as the pair both boast creativity, speed, and incisive passing.

But who would be a better option?

Yoann Gourcuff

The hugely talented Frenchman posses great passing and intelligence. Touted as the playmaker for France in the upcoming World Cup, Gourcuff would be a welcome replacement if Fabregas does depart before Summers end. 

The 23-year-old is also blessed agility and versatility. Gourcuff can be utilized all along the midfield as well as in the second striker or wing role. Having been the focal point of the Bordeaux attack since 2008, the French giants have a £21.8  million release clause on his head.

However, Arsenal are set to receive around £35 million for their captain, Wenger would easily be able to offer a suitable amount.

Joe Cole

The 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder is currently off contract—therefore, Arsenal could be able to acquire Cole's services on a free transfer, which does look appealing. However, the Englishman does have incredibly high wage demands, but as a potential replacement for Cesc Fabregas he doesn't look too shabby.

Boasting strong vision and impressive footwork, Cole would add much-needed skill and experience into the Arsenal midfield. The former West Ham playmaker also brings versatility, power, and balance into the midfield.

But with Gourcuff younger and considered more talented then the aging Cole, it could seem a lackluster option. But if Arsene Wenger were able to secure the England international on a free transfer, it would be a more appealing option.

Either one would be a strong candidate to fulfil Cesc Fabregas's role, but who would be a better one?
