Petr Cech and Jose Reina Share Barclays Golden Glove Award
Petr Cech and Jose Reina will share the Barclays Golden Glove award for the 2009/2010 season, after they finished level on 17 clean sheets each for the season.
The award is the goalkeeping equivalent of the Golden Boot, and goes to the ‘keeper who keeps the most clean sheets during the league campaign.
The Chelsea and Liverpool stoppers went into the final day of the season yesterday tied on 16 shut-outs apiece, and both claimed a final clean sheet against Wigan and Hull respectively to finish on a total of 17 for the season and therefore share the award.
Between them, Cech and Reina have previously won the prize four times out of the five between them since the award was established in 2005 and their domination continues this year.
Aston Villa’s Brad Friedel finished in third place, the veteran American ‘keeper claiming 15 clean sheets in an impressive season.
Last year’s winner Edwin van der Sar saw his bid to retain his personal crown undermined by injuries and also a serious illness to his wife which meant that he missed almost half of the season.
The Manchester United ‘keeper finished with a noteworthy 12 clean sheets from his 21 appearances.
Joe Hart, who was voted in as goalkeeper in the PFA Team of the Year, ended with ten shut outs from this 36 appearances.
