Recap
Be'er Sheva have been one of the Cinderella stories in European football this season, and they continued their incredible run by grabbing a 1-1 draw at St. Mary's and knocking Southampton out of the competition.
Bleacher Report UK commemorated the occasion:
Hapoel took the lead through Maor Buzaglo late in the second half, forcing the Saints to push for two goals in limited time to avoid an embarrassing exit. Virgil van Dijk pulled one back, but the hosts ran out of time to grab a second.
Inter Milan had already been eliminated in Group K, and they celebrated a consolation win against Sparta Prague, winning 2-1.
The Red Devils were forced to play on a horrendous pitch in Ukraine, and manager Jose Mourinho took his precautions, as shared by Simon Peach of the Press Association:
Not surprisingly, the bad conditions led to a rather dull match of football, with United trying the long ball to no avail in the first half. Henrik Mkhitaryan gave the visitors the lead after the break, and with Fenerbahce leading Feyenoord in the Netherlands, the Red Devils could afford to move a few key players to the bench.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic put the final score on the board, but it wasn't good enough for first place in the group, wth Fenerbahce also winning.
The playing conditions were tough in places other than Ukraine as well. The match between Sassuolo and Genk was moved to Friday, with heavy fog making it impossible for the officials to see the whole pitch in Italy. BBC Sport shared this photo:
There was lots of drama in the early kick-offs, with plenty left to play for in Groups H and J. Fiorentina secured the top spot in their group thanks to a 2-1 win over Qarabag, with Federico Chiesa stealing the headlines.
The 19-year-old scored the go-ahead goal and was sent off less than 10 minutes later, resulting in a nervy finale for the visitors. They held on for the win, however, to the delight of ItalianFootballTV:
PAOK Thessaloniki beat Slovan Liberec 2-0 at home, grabbing second place in the group ahead of Qarabag.
In Group H, Belgian side Gent left it very late to join Shakhtar Donetsk in the knockout stages. The Ukrainians cruised to a 4-2 win over Braga, meaning Gent could qualify with a win over lowly Konyaspor.
The side couldn't find a way through the Turkish defence until the final minutes of the match, when Kalifa Coulibaly blasted home a volley to give Gent the win. The match winner shared this photo of the celebrations afterwards:
Villarreal booked their spot in the next round with a 2-1 win over Steaua Bucuresti, with Osmanlispor joining the Spaniards thanks to a 2-0 win against FC Zurich.
