Recap
Fans hoping for some cup magic and two exciting matches probably didn't like what they saw during the first 45 minutes of both contests. Bleacher Report UK summed it up like this:
Leeds nearly took a shock lead at Anfield early, with Hadi Sacko finding himself one-on-one with Simon Mignolet, but the Belgian came out on top.
The hosts showed flashes, and Georginio Wijnaldum almost finished off a superb attacking move, with Marco Silvestri making a heroic last-ditch save. Origi made a great block to deny a shooting chance after Mignolet was caught out of position, and Emre Can pushed a shot just wide after a defensive blunder.
The midfielder did not make a great impression on Bleacher Report's Karl Matchett in the first half:
Stuart Dalla's deflected shot was the last major chance of the first half, and Kemar Roofe nearly started the second half off with a bang, when he fired a strike out of the reach of Mignolet and off the post.
Liverpool didn't show a enough after the break, but the Reds improved toward the end of the match. First, Wijnaldum found the woodwork after a through ball from Sadio Mane, before the in-form Origi opened the score from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross.
Bleacher Report UK were mainly happy at the prospect of not having to sit through extra time:
Woodburn doubled the lead shortly after, scoring his first for the senior team after some great work from Wijnaldum. Per the Klopp's official Twitter account, manager Jurgen Klopp was happy for the teenager:
In Hull, both the Tigers and Newcastle were cautious to start their contest. Yoan Gouffran tried his luck with an ambitious strike, and Eldin Jakupovic had to be alert to deny Dwight Gayle. Jonjo Shelvey put together a fantastic outing in midfield, but overall, the first half saw few chances or excitement.

Isaac Hayden went close, firing a shot across the goal that just about hit the outside post.
The second half had plenty of controversy and drama. First, the visitors were furious not to be given a penalty when Harry Maguire appeared to hold back Mohamed Diame. Minutes later, Jamaal Lascelles made a challenge on Dieumerci Mbokani, who lashed out in response and received his marching orders.
Lee Ryder of the Chronicle noted the hosts had already used up all of their substitutes as well, so the Magpies had the advantage going into extra time:
Diame gave the visitors the lead eight minutes into extra time, but Newcastle gave away their advantage almost instantly, with Robert Snodgrass tying things up.
Per Squawka Football, Newcastle's lead was brief:
The Magpies dominated extra time but couldn't find a second goal, and Snodgrass wasted a huge opportunity late. Penalties would decide the outcome, and Shelvey of all people missed to give Hull the advantage. Gayle also missed, and Jakupovic's save on Gouffran sealed the deal.
Arsenal will host Southampton on Wednesday, while Manchester United take on West Ham United.
