Golden Shoe 2016-17: Top Goalscorers in Europe, Updated Rankings on October 24

Chris LakerOct 24, 2016

Lionel Messi struck two goals for Barcelona against Valencia to take his place alongside some big names in the race for the 2016-17 Golden Shoe award.

The Argentina striker netted an injury-time winner from the penalty spot as Barca took a 3-2 victory at Los Che's Mestalla Stadium on Saturday.

Messi's brace moves him up the Golden Shoe table and puts him level with team-mate Luis Suarez, Roma's Edin Dzeko and Chelsea frontman Diego Costa on seven goals. Suarez bagged his side's second goal at Valencia to help Barca leapfrog Atletico Madrid and go third in La Liga.

Another striker to join an illustrious band on seven goals is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored for Borussia Dortmund as they earned a point at Ingolstadt.

Anthony Modeste edged clear of this group with his eighth goal of the season for Cologne in their 2-1 defeat to Hertha Berlin.

Here's a look at the latest Golden Shoe standings and a review of how the top strikers made their mark over the weekend.

Points for the Golden Shoe table are calculated by the number of goals multiplied by difficulty factor—determined by the league in which the goals are scored.

Goals scored in the Premier League, La Liga or Serie A are worth two points, while in Ligue 1, goals are multiplied by 1.5.

Messi at the double

Barcelona's leading light continued where he left off against Manchester City in the Champions League, taking just 22 minutes to fire his side into the lead with a low left-footed effort.

Valencia stunned the visitors after the half-time break, however, with two goals in four minutes, before Suarez levelled matters.

It was then left to Messi to convert a 94th-minute spot-kick won by Suarez to give Barca a victory that puts them third in La Liga after Atletico Madrid's loss at Sevilla.

As noted by Football Facts, Messi is on a good run of form:

The diminutive playmaker has certainly hit the ground running again after his comeback from a groin injury, and he appears to have recovered well to once again prove the fulcrum for this Barcelona side.

Messi's link-up play with Suarez and Neymar shows no sign of ring-rust, and it is key to success on all fronts for the Spanish giants this season. The good news for Barca fans is Messi is sure to improve as he further regains his match fitness.

In the Bundesliga, Dortmund's Aubameyang got himself on the scoresheet in a thrilling away game at Ingolstadt, which ended 3-3.

OptaFranz noted it was memorable day for the Gabon striker as he was handed the Dortmund captaincy:

Aubameyang has been the subject of renewed interest from Manchester City, as per Neil Fissler of the Sunday Express, and with his pace and poise in and around the penalty area, it is easy to see why.

He helped Dortmund recover from being 2-0 down when he scored with a header in the 59th minute, but he couldn't prevent his side dropping valuable points.

Also in the Bundesliga, Cologne striker Modeste continued his rich vein of goalscoring form at the start of the new campaign.

Modeste's close-range finish was not enough to stop his side being edged out by Hertha Berlin but keeps him at the top of the league's scoring charts.

The former Blackburn Rovers can still not match BATE Borisov's Vitali Rodionov, who remains at the top of the Golden Shoe table.
