Burnley vs. Arsenal: Score and Reaction from 2016 Premier League Match

Gianni VerschuerenOct 2, 2016

Arsenal scored deep in injury time to beat Burnley, 1-0, during Sunday's Premier League action, with Laurent Koscielny the hero.

The hosts neutralised Arsenal in midfield throughout the first half, giving away few chances and threatening on several occasions. The pattern continued in the second half, but Koscielny gave his team the win with a late goal from a corner.

As Arsenal's official Twitter account shared, Granit Xhaka got the start in midfield, while Alex Iwobi also made the starting XI:

Arsenal had a solid start to the match, and Iwobi got his first look on goal after just two minutes, firing a shot over the bar after a poor defensive clearance. Alexis Sanchez beat goalkeeper Tom Heaton shortly after, but his effort flew wide of the mark.

Burnley refused to sit back and be led to the slaughter, opting to play with the Gunners and take their chances. The tactic seemed to work early, as Arsenal weren't as dominant in midfield as they have been the last few weeks.

Iwobi found Mesut Ozil with a nice reverse pass, but the German could only aim his shot into the waiting arms of Heaton. On the other side of the pitch, the hosts kept looking for Sam Vokes, who appeared to enjoy the physical battles with Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

A mistake from the latter gave Jeff Hendrick a shooting chance, although the midfielder perhaps should have played in one of his team-mates instead. Theo Walcott also tried his luck, putting his shot wide.

Meanwhile, Squawka Football noted Santi Cazorla was pulling the strings in midfield:

A mad scramble inside the Arsenal box almost gave Hendrick and Michael Keane a shooting chance, but the Gunners cleared their lines in time. Johann Berg Gudmundsson then tried to pick out Vokes, but the two weren't on the same page, and Petr Cech easily collected.

The two teams were evenly matched in midfield, and as the first half carried on, Arsenal found it more and more difficult to create chances. Ozil was uncharacteristically sloppy with his touch, and the majority of Cazorla's passes went backward and not into the danger areas.

Vokes perhaps should have given the hosts the lead five minutes before half-time, placing a strong header wide of Cech's goal. Mirror Football noted it was a huge chance:

The Gunners applied some late pressure but barely got a look on goal, as the score remained 0-0 heading into half-time.

Arsenal started the second half with plenty of possession, and Sanchez put Heaton to work early from close range. Hendrick answered, firing over after some interplay with Steven Defour.

Iwobi remained active and created some space for himself after 54 minutes, but he completely missed his shot, with the ball going out for a throw. Paddy Power couldn't help himself:

The Gunners started to give the Clarets more trouble, however, and Keane only just managed to block a shot from Ozil after great work from Sanchez. Gudmundsson also went close, putting Cech to work with a header. The resulting corner produced another scramble, but none of the Burnley players could get to the ball.

With 20 minutes left to play, manager Arsene Wenger had to make a change, despite Burnley's strong defensive showing. Walcott fired a shot wide, before Mohamed Elneny and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain finally entered the pitch.

The Gunners wanted a penalty after a failed clearance hit Keane's arm, but their claims fell on deaf ears. Chris Boden of the Burnley Express thought the non-call was the right decision:

The pressure persisted, with Sanchez firing a volley inches wide. Burnley remained dangerous on the counter, however, and Keane found the post with a header with 15 minutes left to play.

Ozil powered a free-kick into the wall, and entering the last 10 minutes, the Gunners were camped inside the Burnley half. Walcott came agonisingly close to scoring with a curling effort, but his shot failed to find the mark.

It was a final corner deep in injury time that decided the match, as Koscielny barged the ball over the line after a knock-down from Walcott. He appeared to handle the ball as he did and score from an offside position, however. After the match, Koscielny sided with the official, per Mattias Karen of ESPN FC:

Arsenal will host Swansea City after the international break on Oct. 15, while Burnley visit Southampton on Oct. 16
