Golden Shoe 2016-17: Top Goalscorers in Europe, Updated Rankings on September 26
Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, the holder of the European Golden Shoe, continued his fine start to the La Liga season with another strike in his team’s 5-0 win over Sporting Gijon on Saturday.
That made it five for the season for the Uruguay international, a mark that’s also been reached by Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who bagged a brace for his side. However, the top marksman in Europe’s top five leagues at the moment remains Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi on six.
With the elite leagues still in the early stages, there aren’t any big names in the top five of the current standings; Rosenborg's Christian Gytkjaer, Kairat's Gerard Gohou, Evgeni Kabaev of Sillamae Kalev and Paide's Vjatseslav Zahovaiko are locked in a four-way tie for the lead.
Here’s a look at how things are shaping up in pursuit of this coveted individual prize and how the main contenders for the award fared over the weekend.
| T1 | Christian Gytkjaer | Rosenborg | 17 x 1.0 | 17.0 |
| T1 | Gerard Gohou | Kairat | 17 x 1.0 | 17.0 |

Rules: To calculate a player's points tally, their goals are multiplied by a difficulty factor based upon which league they're scored in.
For example, in the Premier League or Serie A, goals are worth two points, while in Ligue 1, goals are multiplied by 1.5. For the likes of Gytkjaer, Gohou, Kabaev or Zahovaiko, their leagues have a difficulty constant of one, so their goals and points tallies are the same.
Suarez, Aguero on Target

Without the injured Lionel Messi, Barcelona looked to Suarez and Neymar to thrive in attack. The duo did precisely that, with Gijon unable to cope with their brilliant play in the final third.
The former opened the scoring in the first half, rounding the keeper calmly before stroking home. Neymar did his damage after Sporting were reduced to 10 men, scoring two in quick succession to add some gloss to the scoreline.
As we can see here courtesy of OptaJoe, Suarez seems to enjoy going up against Sporting:
In the Premier League it was Aguero who caught the eye. The striker was making his return to action in the competition following his domestic suspension and opened the scoring for his side with a tremendous goal, using expert control to nudge the ball past the defender and then finishing emphatically through the legs of the goalkeeper.
The City star made it two for the day with a second half penalty. In all competitions this season, Aguero has netted 11 goals in six games, but his manager Pep Guardiola wants more.
“He knows I want more and he can play better,” he said, per Patrick Surlis of Sky Sports. “That is what I want and what we want, but we are so happy.”

Bleacher Report UK compared the merits of the two South American strikers, who are arguably the finest centre-forwards in the game at the moment:
Back in La Liga, Antoine Griezmann moved level with Suarez on five strikes, as he netted the only goal in a 1-0 win for Atletico Madrid over Deportivo La Coruna.
It took the France international, who has perhaps been a little jaded from the summer’s UEFA European Championships, a little time to find his best form this season. But he’s abuzz with energy at the point of Diego Simeone’s attack and has shown signs of a burgeoning understanding with Kevin Gameiro, too.
After his winning goal, Griezmann paid tribute to the work done by his manager to help improve his game, per Kieran Canning of Agence France-Presse:
What will encourage the Atletico supporters is that Griezmann doesn’t usually get off to a start this quick, per MisterChip (English):
In Serie A, Icardi was stopped from scoring for just the second time this season as Inter drew 1-1 with Bologna at the San Siro. A midweek brace for the Nerazzurri skipper in a 2-0 win over Empoli pushed him to six goals for the campaign.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, a four-time Golden Shoe winner, will undoubtedly be in contention for this gong come the end of the campaign, although he endured a frustrating weekend. The Portuguese was substituted by manager Zinedine Zidane after a fruitless day in front of goal; he’s only found the back of the net once this season.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski was unable to score for the second game running for his side. Carlo Ancelotti kept up his perfect start as manager, though, with Joshua Kimmich stealing in to score a late winner against Hamburg.
