La Liga Results 2016: Full Table and Scores After Final Week 4 Match

Rory MarsdenSep 19, 2016

Alaves and Deportivo La Coruna played out an uninspiring goalless draw on Monday at the Mendizorrotza Stadium to complete Week 4 of the 2016-17 LaLiga season.

Neither side was prepared to commit many players forward in an attempt to snatch a win, and despite a slight improvement in quality after the break, both teams seemed happy to settle for 0-0.

The division's big three teams—Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona—all claimed victories earlier in the matchday, and Los Blancos remain on top of the standings with maximum points.

Neither Depor nor Alaves threatened the opposition goal in the opening 45 minutes; Marlos Moreno's long-range effort was the only chance to force a save in the first half.

Alaves youngster Theo Hernandez pulled an attempt wide of the post early on after excellent work down the left, and Florin Andone scooped a decent opportunity over the bar for the visitors, but neither stopper had much to do.

The hosts began to take control of possession after the break but could still do little to trouble the Depor goal.

Unquestionably, their best chances came through Theo, playing in the left wing-back role, with the Frenchman driving into the box often and causing many problems but unable to carve out a genuine chance.

European football writer Matthew Law hailed the contribution of the young Atletico loanee:

However, despite the occasional flash of inspiration from Theo, it was a largely subdued affair and inevitably finished goalless after 90 minutes.

Earlier in the weekend, Real continued their perfect record in 2016-17 as they claimed a fourth win of the campaign.

Goals from James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema saw manager Zinedine Zidane's side to a 2-0 win over Espanyol despite a less-than-stellar performance, per Spanish football writer Andy West:

Barcelona bounced back from their shock defeat to Alaves last time out in the league by handing Leganes a 5-1 drubbing.

Lionel Messi netted a double for the defending champions, with Luis Suarez, Neymar and Rafinha also scoring.

Atletico won their clash with Sporting Gijon 5-0, with Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres both scoring twice and Kevin Gameiro also finding the net.

The misery continued for Valencia, as they remain on zero points following a 2-1 defeat to Athletic Bilbao, while Las Palmas remain loftily placed thanks to a 1-0 win over Malaga.
