Rob BlanchetteSep 14, 2016

Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, as a last-minute goal from the Portuguese side shared the points in Group F of the 2016 UEFA Youth League at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium in the Spanish capital.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a surprise opening-day defeat in Group E, losing 3-2 to Monaco at the Tottenham Training Centre in Enfield.

A hat-trick by starlet Irvin Cardona was enough to give the French team the points, as Spurs battled to haul themselves back into the contest after a poor start.

Wednesday Recap

Los Blancos' youth outfit were caught on their heels as Sporting scored in the the third-minute of injury time at the end of the game to claim a draw.

Paraguayan talent Sergio Diaz opened the scoring for Real after 55 minutes but a late attack by the visitors saw Rosendo Marques snatch a draw in Spain.

It was a disappointing day at the office for Spurs, as Monaco stole all three points on their travels to England.

Cardona was the home side's tormentor from the opening whistle, scoring after only seven minutes to stun the north London outfit.

Seventeen-year-old prodigy Samuel Shashoua equalised after 24 minutes, but Cardona was once again in the right place to reclaim the lead on the stroke of half-time.

The young Frenchman completed his hat-trick shortly after the hour mark, but Tottenham continued to fight.

A penalty from Shayon Harrison gave Spurs hope in the final 10 minutes, but Monaco held firm to claim the victory.

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 11: Shayon Harrison of Tottenham Hotspur celebrates scoring his hat-trick and his side's third goal during the Barclays U21 Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur U21 and Sunderland U21 at White Hart Lane on April 11, 2016

All the goals came in the first half when Leverkusen defeated CSKA 2-1 at the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion.

German midfielder Simon Rhein broke the deadlock, but the Russians equalised through a penalty from Timur Pukhov.

Atakan Akkaynak doubled the hosts' lead after 39 minutes, and the second strike was enough after a goalless second half.

Borussia Dortmund and Porto also won, as they defeated Legia Warsaw and F.C. Copenhagen, respectively.

Italian giants Juventus scored a last-minute goal to beat Sevilla 2-1 at home on their opening day, as Gabriele Bove claimed the crucial winner six minutes into stoppage time.

Spurs would have expected to beat Monaco's youth set-up at home, but the variation in Cardona's attacking prowess was too much on Wednesday.

Tottenham are left at the bottom of Group E and will need to kick-start their campaign in Matchday 2.
