La Liga Table 2016: Latest Standings Following Friday's Week 2 Results

James DudkoAug 26, 2016

Malaga left it late to pinch a point against RCD Espanyol, when striker Charles scored in the final minute to earn a 2-2 draw. His goal completed a spirited comeback from two down at Cornella-El Prat.

Earlier, Deportivo went top when they took a point after grinding out a 0-0 draw in Real Betis. It's a welcome point for a side that could be on the verge of losing two key players.

Here's what the table looks like after Friday's results:

Recap

It took Espanyol less than half an hour to go in front against Malaga. Gerard Moreno was the scorer after sweeping in a neat left-foot shot.

BARCELONA, SPAIN - FEBRUARY 08: Gerard Moreno of RCD Espanyol looks dejected after Mikel Oyarzabal of Real Sociedad de Futbol scored his team's third goal during the La Liga match between RCD Espanyol and Real Sociedad de Futbol at Cornella-El Prat Stadi

The Catalan club benefited from an excellent performance by the jet-heeled forward Leo Baptistao. He was leading the line well, consistently exploiting the spaces between the lines and looking to stretch the Malaga defence.

The home side were also winning the midfield battle, with their Pablo Piatti-led quartet bossing around Recio and Ignacio Camacho. Malaga needed to see more of the ball to let playmaker Juanpi do some damage.

Yet it was Espanyol who struck again when Moreno doubled the lead. He moved sharply to meet Piatti's whipped cross with a deft header.

The goal kept up Moreno's prolific form with Espanyol, per OptaJose:

Moreno's joy was shortlived, however, when Diego Llorente turned in a free-kick to give Malaga a lifeline.

Piatti put Moreno through again inside the final 15 minutes, but this time the striker's left foot let him down. He would soon rue the miss when Charles snatched a point for Malaga in the 90th minute.

The striker reeled in Camacho's header before hitting a rasping right-footed drive inside the box. Afterwards, Charles reflected on his late heroics, per La Liga:

It marked more disappointment for Espanyol after last week's high-scoring defeat in Sevilla. The club hasn't won yet, but things haven't been dull as Sid Lowe of the Guardian points out:

Depor had to make do without star striker Lucas Perez while the player was nearing a move to Premier League side Arsenal, according to BBC Sport's David Ornstein.

Naturally, the visitors looked a little jaded without their focal point in attack. What few chances Deportivo did create were spurned by Florin Andone.

Whenever Betis pushed the issue, it was veteran winger Joaquin who led the charge. The 35-year-old worked the flank and tried to get Antonio Sanabria and Ruben Castro the right service in the box.

Still, Deportivo stood firm at the back. Valencia target Sidnei asserted himself, while midfielder Pedro Mosquera protected the back four well.

In the end, a rugged match failed to come to life. However, it did take a late save from German Lux to maintain the stalemate and protect the point after substitute Dani Ceballos was put through by Chelsea loanee Charly Musonda.

Deportivo La Coruna's Brazilian defender Sidnei (R) vies for the ball with Betis's Paraguayan Tony Sanabria during the Spanish league football match Real Betis Balompie versus Deportivo La Coruna at the Benito Villamarin stadium in Sevilla on August 26, 2

It's still a creditable point for a Deportivo side depleted at both ends of the team.

Both Espanyol and Depor will vie to finish in the UEFA Europa League places this season, a daunting target for two squads lacking depth.

Saturday's games will see the Madrid clubs try to influence things at the top of the table.
