Saturday Recap
Mike Phelan continues to make a strong case to transition from interim to full-time manager for Hull. While it won't maintain its current pace, the club has far exceeded expectations early on with wins in its first two matches.
Phelan had a big hand in the victory. He brought Shaun Maloney on in the 73rd minute, and in the 79th minute, the 33-year-old midfielder broke the deadlock and put Hull in the lead. The club highlighted why Saturday's result was so notable:
While Hull continue to defy their skeptics, Burnley provided Saturday's biggest shock by far. Despite maintaining a little over 19 percent possession and getting two shots on target, the Clarets earned a 2-0 victory over Liverpool.
The defeat was a throwback to the early Brendan Rodgers era, when the Reds controlled the ball to little effect and fell apart when their defense was tested. Liverpool had 26 total shots but put just five on target. They had little answer for Burnley's compact, organized defense.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche praised the work of his team, per Burnley's official site:
"Everyone has seen how [Liverpool] keep the ball and flood the midfield with five and six at times. It's very difficult to play against, as regards keeping the focus on your game plan, and I thought the players did that fantastically well. We never got disappointed without the ball, but we kept our shape and kept looking to break on the counter. Then, you need good players to do good things and I thought we did today. I thought both finishes were absolutely sublime.
"
Following the high of last week's 4-3 over Arsenal, the loss was a further reminder of Liverpool's frailties. Getting into the top won't be easy.
Saturday's marquee fixture ended in lackluster fashion, with Leicester City drawing 0-0 with Arsenal.
The Foxes could've walked away with a 1-0 win had the referee awarded them a penalty in the 88th minute. Hector Bellerin brought down Ahmed Musa in the box but avoided drawing a foul. BBC World Service's John Bennett was among many incredulous with Mark Clattenburg's decision to wave play on:
One point through two matches isn't how Arsenal or Leicester will have wanted to begin the 2016-17 season, but they both have plenty of time to climb up the table.
An officiating decision was also front and center in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Watford. On a yellow card, Diego Costa fell theatrically to the turf in the second half. Referee Jonathan Moss, however, opted against sending Costa off for a second bookable offense.
As Howler Magazine's Michael Caley noted, it's the second week in a row the Chelsea forward has avoided an early exit:
"So Diego Costa has now

-attempted leg murder on Adrian
-executed the worst dive of the season
without picking up a second yellow.
And just as he put West Ham to the sword a week ago, Costa scored the winner in the 87th minute to give the Blues three points.
The Spain international is coming off a disappointing 2015-16 season. After scoring 20 goals in 26 appearances for Chelsea in 2014-15, he had 12 goals in 28 games a year ago.
Some argue Costa's struggles were in part a result of the fact he toned down his win-at-all-costs mentality. He's at his best when he plays with a competitive edge that at times crosses the line. If the last two matches are indicative of what lies ahead, Costa will be equal parts lethal finisher and pantomime villain.
And an on-form Costa could put the Blues in pole position for the Premier League title.
