England vs. Iceland: Score and Twitter Reaction from Euro 2016

Christopher SimpsonJun 27, 2016

Iceland stunned a poor England side at the Stade de Nice on Monday, coming from behind to win, 2-1, and reach the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2016.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with a penalty on four minutes, but just 34 seconds after the restart, Ragnar Sigurdsson equalised with a close-range volley. In the 18th minute, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson fired Iceland in front.

After the breathless opening period, the Three Lions again faced the prospect of breaking down a side that packed men behind the ball. As they were against Russia and Slovakia, England were frustrated at their inability to seriously trouble the opposition's goal.

Raheem Sterling's inclusion in the starting lineup may have raised some eyebrows, but he made an immediate impact as he won a penalty in the opening minutes when he was fouled by goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson. Rooney duly dispatched the spot-kick with a low strike to the goalkeeper's right.

Bleacher Report UK's Sam Tighe noted the impact the goal could have had on the game—but for Sigurdsson's immediate equaliser:

Aron Gunnarsson delivered a long throw-in into the area, and Sigurdsson showed great hunger to pounce on Kari Arnason's flick-on to put the ball in at the back post.

The Times' Henry Winter noted England's struggles at the back:

England pressed for the lead but soon found themselves behind, again following an Iceland throw-in. This time, Sigthorsson received the ball after a couple of quick passes on the edge of the area, and Joe Hart allowed the low effort to squirm through his left glove.

NICE, FRANCE - JUNE 27: Joe Hart of England dives in vain as Kolbeinn Sigthorsson of Iceland scores his team's second goal during the UEFA EURO 2016 round of 16 match between England and Iceland at Allianz Riviera Stadium on June 27, 2016 in Nice, France

Squawka Football noted the goalkeeper's poor play, as Hart was also responsible for Wales' goal against England in the group stage:

The match remained end-to-end as both sides traded blows.

Harry Kane unleashed a well-struck volley on goal, but Halldorsson proved equal to his effort, while Danny Rose's shot was deflected into the keeper's hands. At the other end, Ari Skulason and Gylfi Sigurdsson sent shots off target.

After the break, Ragnar Sigurdsson attempted a sensational overhead kick following a corner, but this time, Hart remained resolute and kept the effort out.

Meanwhile, England struggled to create chances, their play often ponderous and unimaginative. The Mail on Sunday's Oliver Holt implored them to improve, while Tighe summed up their failure to cause Iceland problems:

The Three Lions continued to toil away with little success as Iceland sat back and invited their opponents to come at them, but England lacked the cutting edge needed to threaten them.

In a rare sojourn up field for Iceland in the final half-hour, Gunnarsson tested Hart with a vicious effort, but he struck the ball straight at the keeper—a missed chance that England failed to punish.

England's tradition of underperformance and heartbreak at international tournaments has continued unabated—the one silver lining is the hope that this young team can learn from the experience and return stronger for it at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

For Iceland, the fairytale continues, and they'll face France in the next round. The tournament hosts aren't likely to be as poor as England were, but Iceland have shown they don't deserve to be written off just yet.

Post-Match Reaction

England manager Roy Hodgson, whose contract with the FA was up following the tournament, revealed his decision to step down as Three Lions boss. Per BBC Sport's Tom Rostance, he said in a statement:

"

We are out of the Euros so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players. They have done fantastically, and done everything asked of them. When I arrived I was tol that players would not turn up or pull out at the last minute but I haven't seen any of that.

Gary Neville and Ray Lewington have asked me to speak on their behalf. They arrived with me and will leave with me and I'd like to thank them for the major part they have played in team preparations. Finally, I want to thank the support staff at the FA, and the fans.

It's been a fantastic journey the last four years, I will look back on it with pride. I want to thank the media for the support you've given me for in the last four years. I'm sorry it's ended in another exit but these things happen and I wish you the very best and I hope you can still see a England team in a final of a major tournament very soon, something that we have been unable to deliver.

"

Per Rostance, Heimir Hallgrimsson, one of Iceland's two head coaches, said: "I was more relaxed than during the game against Austria. If someone had told me a few years ago that we would reach the last eight I have to say I would not believe it. No obstacle is too big for these guys now."
