EPL Table: 2016 Top Scorers, Standings After Post-Week 33 Premier League Scores

James DudkoApr 10, 2016

Jamie Vardy ended a six-game scoring drought to hit his 20th and 21st goals of the season and push Leicester City a step closer to the Premier League title. Vardy's brace beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, maintaining the Foxes' seven-point lead over Tottenham Hotspur at the top.

His double salvo also means Vardy has applied the pressure on Tottenham frontman Harry Kane at the top of the league's scoring charts. Vardy is now just one behind Spurs' No. 10 in the race for the golden boot, after Kane was blanked at White Hart Lane against Manchester United.

But Kane could still take plenty of consolation from seeing Spurs steamroll United and keep his club's title challenge going for at least another week.

Vardy at the Double Puts Leicester Closer to the Title

If you want one game to sum up Vardy's incredible value to Leicester's equally incredible season, then this would be it. Quiet for most of a fairly turgid affair, Vardy sprang to life deep in the second half, once again utilising the electric pace that has frightened the life out of defenders all season.

His first goal could be an emblem for Leicester's success. Midfield workhorse N'Golo Kante made a tackle; fellow central midfielder Danny Drinkwater collected the loose ball and played a long pass over the top into the inside left channel. Vardy sprinted on to the accurate delivery, took a smart first touch and calmly slotted the ball home, going across Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone with assurance.

It capped a refreshingly simple yet devastating move.

Vardy's opener was beautiful in its simplicity.

The hidden truth of football's modern era, where armchair strategists talk about "transitions" and can't wait to show off a heat map, is that the game hasn't changed that much.

A striker with lightning pace and calmness in front of goal will still get free against any tactical structure, provided the pass is right and played decisively. Consider Vardy and Leicester reminders of what can be achieved when the game is not over-complicated.

There was nothing complex about the way Vardy raced clear to seal the points in stoppage time. Substitute Demarai Gray took a high ball down with an exquisite touch before simply prodding a pass into space for Leicester's main man to chase.

Vardy did just that before rounding Mannone and tucking in his second.

What Vardy reminded every would-be top striker is that efficiency is the name game. He took his chances when they came, a fact reflected by his numbers, per Squawka:

Vardy also matched a piece of club history, per Premier League broadcaster John Dykes:

Kane Shut Out, But Spurs Still Run Riot

Kane struggled to get on track against United's usually stingy defence. Both Chris Smalling and Daley Blind tracked him well for much of the first hour.

But things came unhinged for United's back four once Dele Alli turned in Christian Eriksen's cross. Alli's contribution cemented his status as Spurs' second-most effective attacking outlet in this calendar year, according to WhoScored.com:

Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela added gloss to the scoreline and put a severe dent in United's top-four hopes, with the Red Devils now four points adrift of neighbours Manchester City.

The result also means Spurs stay in the hunt for the title and, in terms of bragging rights, have reopened a six-point gap ahead of north London rivals Arsenal in third.

Tottenham haven't finished above the Gunners once since Arsene Wenger took over the latter in 1996. They won't get a better chance to snap that streak.

As for Kane, he was substituted with less than two minutes left in regulation time. But he still holds the lead in the top scorers race. Off days are rare for the England man, so he should remain the favourite for the golden boot.

But it's the Foxes who are firm favourites for the title, needing just three wins to be certain. With Vardy back among the goals, threatening up top while a miserly defence looks impregnable behind him, Leicester claiming the trophy now looks a mere formality.
