Real Madrid vs. Sevilla: Goals, Highlights from the 2015/16 La Liga Match

Joe GallagherMar 20, 2016

With the two sides above them both dropping points this weekend, Real Madrid had an opportunity to gain ground in La Liga when they hosted Sevilla on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane's side sat third going into the match, some 13 points behind Barcelona but just four behind cross-town rivals Atletico, who lost to Sporting Gijon on Saturday.

Benoit Tremoulinas struck the woodwork for the visitors before Karim Benzema turned home Gareth Bale's cross brilliantly to put Real Madrid 1-0 up after six minutes.

Madrid looked to be in the mood for more, and went close when Gareth Bale's shot was tipped onto the woodwork.

They were also unfortunate not to have scored from the resulting corner when their goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

The home fans were more aggrieved when the referee awarded Sevilla a soft penalty after 25 minutes.

But Keylor Navas saved from the spot to protect Madrid's lead.

They held the 1-0 advantage until half time and ought to have added to it near the hour-mark, but Cristiano Ronaldo blazed over the bar with his penalty.

Gareth Bale struck the woodwork and Kevin Gameiro was the next to have a goal chalked out for offside - incorrectly.

Finally the game got its second goal thanks to Ronaldo after 64 minutes:

And then Bale tapped home two minutes later to put Madrid 3-0 up.

Jese added a fourth with five minutes of normal time to play.

And that was how it ended - 4-0 - three points which move Madrid to within a point of Atletico.

Next up for Madrid is Barcelona in next month's Clasico.
