Ref Cesar Flores Shot Dead by Player After Red Card in Argentinian Football Game

Matt JonesFeb 15, 2016

Police in Argentina have confirmed referee Cesar Flores was shot dead during a game this past weekend by a player he had sent off.

According to Rita Sobot of the Daily Mirror, the incident occurred in the Cordoba district of the country on Sunday. Flores gave the player in question his marching orders for apparently "flooring an opponent," according to the report. The player then fetched the gun from his backpack and "ran onto the pitch as the game was continuing." The man is said to have shot Flores three times—once in the neck, head and chest.

"It all happened during the match," a police spokesman said. "We don't know what happened with the referee, but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him."

He also allegedly shot another player, Walter Zarate, in the chest. While the 25-year-old was "seriously injured," his wounds are not thought to be life-threatening.

Sobot noted the police have yet to capture the shooter, but he is still being pursued.
