The Very Best Tweets from January Deadline Day 2016

Ryan BaileyFeb 1, 2016

In years gone by, deadline day was an opportunity for football fans to batten down the hatches and watch the fireworks as the world's biggest clubs make increasingly desperate attempts to recruit new blood.

Sadly, aside from Manchester City's managerial coup, according to Jamie Jackson on the Guardian, deadline day was a bit of a damp squib. There were no moves for Loic Remy, Saido Berahino or Alex Teixeira, and there was no significant reason for the neutral fan to get excited:

World Cup's Most Disappointing Players 😬

A primary reason for the lack of action in the window was the number of clubs that did not do any business. Aston Villa, for example, were the only club in the bottom six who did not make any January signings:

Villa Park may have been quiet, but there was plenty of action on Italian TV, where it appeared a TV reporter on the Sportitalia network received some traditional English hospitality during a live broadcast:

The closest we came to any such excitement on UK airwaves was this barely noticeable dancing at Watford:

While the tradition of shoving purple foreign objects into the ears of Sky Sports News reporters appears to have dissipated, the tradition of lower-league clubs poking fun at the window on social media is very much alive:

The folks behind Heathrow Airport's Twitter feed also have form for #Banter, and Monday provided no exception:

Arsenal were among the clubs who failed to produce the chequebook on deadline day, which led to the usual stream of jokes at their expense:

There was also disappointment from Arsenal's title rivals, Leicester, who were linked with Remy, Mame Diouf and CSKA Moscow's Ahmed Musa. Unfortunately, no reinforcements were added to the strike force:

Leicester's failure to secure Remy's services meant that Radamel Falcao was free to pursue football elsewhere. At the time of writing, however, his attempts to reignite his career outside of Stamford Bridge have been futile:

One of the more surprising moves of the day was Steven Fletcher's loan to Marseille:

Many believed that Saido Berahino would finally get his move away from West Brom, but the Baggies appear content to let the England striker's contract run down, as they turned down several advances from Newcastle:

It wouldn't be deadline day without a Peter Odemwingie storyline. The Stoke forward reportedly boarded a plane pointed toward Marseille; however, the deal fell through.

The Ligue 1 side apparently settled for Fletcher instead, leaving Odemwingie with yet another unnecessary deadline-day journey:

Everton confirmed the £13.5 million capture of Lokomotiv Moscow's Oumar Niasse, who apparently boasts a superhuman goalscoring record:

Daniel Sturridge was also in the thick of the action. Well, kind of:

The biggest deal of the day was confirmed in the final hour, as Stoke paid a club-record £18.3 million for Porto midfielder Giannelli Imbula (as per the BBC), but overall, it was yet another underwhelming deadline day.

At least there was reason for the beleaguered fans at Charlton Athletic to celebrate. We're just going to park this one here and leave the punch line to you...
